How to get young men to trim their hair and shave?

Great news. Fabulous news.

Spent some time with my son a few weeks ago. He came home and then we went to Montreal. The hair was . He hadn't shave so the facial hair was:



When we left for the train station his cap was turned backwards ....he has never done that before. But through it all, I remembered what my mom said...."Just ignore it" The more you talk about it, the longer it will last. A few times we went to Montreal she mentioned barber but he said no not interested. In the past she had been able to get him there when I couldn't.

So it was hard but we said not a thing about the hair pon him ead or the facial hair.

After a few days he says, Mom, I need to go to the barber....can I have $20? he's working but you never see hand reach in purse SO fast. Bent over backwards to make sure he could go when he was ready. I said, you might want to ask him about a shave while you're there....he didn't answer.

Anyway came home with hair BEAUTIFULLY trimmed, face nicely, no moustache, just neatly groomed hair under his mouth in thin strip, down to his chin, and hair on his chin. He looked REALLY nice. Well we complimented him and he smiled, his whole countenance was brightened up . He didn't wear the cap again after that.

He isn't rebellious and it had not come to locks. He has never liked going to the barber. His dad took him to the barber for his first haircut. I still remember the day...he kept talking about "haircut". After that it was protests of "I don't want to go to the barbra." whenever it was time for a trim or haircut.

So his dad got the equipment to trim his hair and he didn't seem to mind that. Then when he was let me see, 7, his dad gave him a designer haircut and his mom freaked......and flipped out.....



That was the last haircut his father gave him. It was mother dragging him to the barber from age 7 - 17. He was always resistant but became more resistant. So grandmother took over whenever we visited her. After he went to university he started to cut his own hair. Not bad but sometimes there are LONG gaps between trims. A couple of years ago, all of the grandmother's requests to take him to the barber got turned down flat.

This is the first time in his life he has asked to go to the barber. I hope this is the shape of things to come.

Wonder if this sudden interest means there is a love interest. I could say you'll never meet a nice young lady if you look so scruffy...but the ignore it and it will stop strategy advocated by his grandmother seems to be working. The drop down pants last only for one summer a few years ago....thank God. He doesn't seem to feel the need to be permanently in hoodies though he still wears them Come to think of it, he didn't bring any black hoodies this time.

My parents used to MAKE me get my head shaved off down to bristle length every summer. I hated it. I had no choice. I always felt uncomfortable, ridiculous looking and totally odd. This was even BEFORE the Beatles and long hair became 'fashionable'. They made such an issue out of it that WHEN I finally reached the point where I was in charge of my hair I just stopped going to the barber.

Miss Lucy gives me a bit of a trim every couple of years or so but right now I'd say my hair is about as long today as it was back in 1970-71. The beard's way better mind you... although it's more of a goatee in the summer months...but now, after all these years, it's pure white. I'm an 'old goat'. "Ram it!!!"

Point? Let children do what they want with their hair. They're kids. AND...they have feelings. Screw around with that and they could spend the next 50 years making up for lost time...and a lack of understanding.

YOU like short hair? Get a hair cut. Let the next person decide what's right for them.

I like medium to long hair for me. For men I like a nice clean cut look but not too short. Well groomed, clean shaven, etc.

Well I stopped dragging him to the barber at around 17. It got to the point where I would speak to the barber in advance and just drop him off. I have no control over the facial hair. When he was younger I would make him shave when he worked for me. Now I guess, I will just ask him to have it groomed at the barber when he works for me and definitely have the hair neatly shaped. He has no problem doing this when it is to earn money. Other than that, my Mom convinced me that it is best to ignore it and say nothing but sometimes.



He looks nice now though.

What is it with men and hair and facial hair anyway? I don't get it.
