Babysitting Rates for Teens????

Moms, this has probably been discussed before but I need some help with this now. I have never done babysitting or had one for Kimmy because her Nana keeps her and we give her gifts or love offerings from time to time.

I have a 14 year old neighbor who seems to be responsible. She has taken babysitting courses and has a certificate. She's right next door which is very convenient while Nana is over 30 minutes away. I have to take Kimmy to her before work and pick her up afterward when I work only 15 minutes from home. This is becoming tedious.

My hours will be about 10 hours on Sunday or a holiday that falls on a weekday and kids are out but I have to work. And about 2 1/2 to 3 hours at night when I attend my business meetings once a week.

Can I get some opinions or does anyone know the going hourly/daily rates for teenage babysitters? I have gotten some crazy numbers but I want to hear from people who actually employee teenage babysitters. Keep in mind that Kimmy is almost 4.

I am taking the girls to Chuckie Cheese on Sunday so they can get to know each other and her Mom says she is excited about her new job. I also have to figure out if she comes to my house or I drop Kimmy. I am not too keen on people in my house in my absence and she has a few neighborhood friends who visit her when her Mom is working but she basically spends her time with them outside. I guess we will have to see how it works out and I may start with her coming over when I'm at my meetings at night.

i think it would be best to ask people who babysit in your area because the rates are generally geographical..

eg in the NY metro area a babysitter would easily go between $8- $15 an hour depending on what they are doing.

maybe you can look at sittercity.com to get an idea of rates in your area.

it varies by state/city.

before the sitter starts be sure to go over a list of what is expected and what is inappropriate.

this way everyone is on the same page as to what expectations are.

also emergency #s, fire exits, smoke alarm etc , the usual stuff.

why wouldn't you want someone in your house, since your house is already child proof etc ?

i am also thinking a 10 hr day with a 14 year old is a lot.

why cant your mom come over from the night before to take kimmy or if that is not good for her, have kimmy spend the night with her nana?

i would reconsider that for such a long period ..

@ least a 16 yo

and since u doing it for so many hrs, u might wanna jus drop a flat rate for the day...

at 14, $50 fi de day would've sounded great to me

an mi agree...for the longer periods see if the girl's mom willlet u drop kimmy there...that way there'll be adults 'around' just in case..

she can probly hand the couple hrs in the evenin on her own at ur placr

The teen lives next door and her Mom has said she will be there so we are clear on the hours so far. I work from 10-6:45 on Sunday's with 30 minutes of travel time total, so it's not 10 hours for her, just for Nana who is not my Mother but an older lady so we call her Nana. At night, Mom will be there. I did tell her she can probably just sit at my house with Kimmy at night so she'll be in bed when I come in. For the full day, I am just not keen to having someone in my house all day unless I know them very well. As time goes on, we may progress to that.

I will check sitter.com Kia. I am sure there should be a scale that determines the going rates for certain areas. I want a flat fee for the daily hours and I know the short term care has to be hourly unless we can agree on a set fee for that. Mom said she's going to ask around too because she has not done babysitting in years.

I can say though, so far, no one has said $50 for babysitting. That's a lot my dear. There's a Daycare that wants $55 for the day and I said no.


Gen, thanks for those tips. I have to make sure we get something in writing and it will include the do's and don'ts. I'm hoping it will be like a big sister/little sister relationship between them so it won't be like "work" for her. Just having fun with a toddler and getting a little spending money. Of course, it will start her on the path for when she do progress to summer jobs and stuff.

Kimmy spends the weekend with &quot;Nana&quot; (babysitter) a lot of the Sundays I have to work but the distance is getting to me. Plus, she has an 8 year old she adopted who hangs from the chandelier. She's on meds and behaves like a smaller kid. Screaming tantrums and she destroys the toys I send with Kimmy. I bought her a Princess watch and did not know Kimmy wore it over there. The child, who's name is Kia (no joke!) bit the watch and left a ton of bite marks on her new watch. I was soo ticked. She wanted to buy another one but I let it go. Kimmy is coming back home with bad habits, hair uncombed, wearing the same clothes and missing items. This has gotten worse in the last year so I am looking for someone different.

$10 an hour down here for an adult

14 years old is kinda young tho' - easily distracted, frustrated, bad decision maker, commitment

But you know, that is what I thought would be acceptable for a day. Between 20 and $25. The State only pay Foster Parents $14.60 a day to watch a healthy child which I think is ridiculous. Some counties don't even pay that much.

My daughter calculated that Kimmy's Daycare is $125 a week and $25 a day and divided by 8-9 working hours about $3+ an hour for hourly rates.

I've been reading sitter rates online and the ranges are from $3 an hour to 16.50. I may need to quit my job and go into babysitting at some of these rates. I can't believe the rates people pay for someone in a home compared to in a facility. I never got up to 16.50 taking care of elderly adults. I am in the wrong field!

Kimmy's daycare is $25 a day and people tell me that is too much. If you do the daily rate, it's $35-$40 a day. One Daycare wanted to charge me $55 for keeping Kimmy on Sunday while I work. They know we need it and can charge what they want and then they do have overhead and employees and stuff to pay. But it can get ridiculous.
