Question for the mothers here

Do you notice that because of cultural influences (jamaicans) that your child is very different from the american kids, manners wise etc. Does this mean that your child is perceived as shy ?


would you say your child has more manners than the average american child, is more respectful towards adults etc . dem kinda tings there ?

I am also interested to hear what teachers on here notice with the 2 cultures too.

no my pikney dem not shy at all

but last time me guh for some book fair at the schooland had the two boys wid me the librarian tell me how my boys always so polite and have manners

and when i call over my next door neighbour (dem kinda had playdate ) and ask if them wreaking havoc, she seh that i shouldnt worry about that cause dem always very polite.

u nuh i was a quiet reserved little girl...so in comparison to that them very physically active, and i guess is just normal for boys?

well a number of jamaicans that are in my building is a shame before gawd ahn man.
mi tell dem as much when dem not trying fi hide fram mi.
mi haffi remind dem (too much in my opinion) daht dem wont end up good if dem continue carryon di way dem behavin.
but di rest are good and most folks call dem shy.

girlKia is strong willed and honest -- not exactly jamaican well behave pickney attitude in school as she will speak her mind if she disagrees with what you are doing


the report from other parents are that they both have excellent manners, please and thank you, usage of cutlery, etc.. so mi haffi seh - nagging at home about good manners works

I have always been complimented on his good manners. Teachers have often told me that they <span style="font-style: italic">at first</span> thought he was shy, but they found out in a hurry that he isn't.

He's reserved, but he will speak up if he feel he's been wronged or supm such...

I have noticed <span style="font-style: italic">for the most part</span> that there's a huge difference between his manners and those of his Canadian friends (although he's Canadian too )

Most of them will charge into the house on their way to his room and unless I pull them up, they won't say hi.

They will be given food and never say thanks unless they are reminded.

They will call and not even a 'hello' much less a 'how are you' before they ask for him.

so my daughter's teacher made a comment that

my daughter is so attentive in class that it's scary

and that it seem like all my daughter does is school work at home

and that when mi did come fi report card conference (5 mins maximium) mi nevah ask har nuh questions bout mi daughter


even after mi tell the ditz seh the likkle girl have swimming lessons once a week and that we are getting ready to have her start tae kwon do



back when the school year had just begun mi mek har know that it is ok for her to send home HW sheets during breaks, as it gives my daughter practice, that &quot;I&quot; had begun to work with my daughter on using reference materials such as dictionary etc. and that when she the teacher did not send home HW, I gave my daughter sheets to do so that simple facts that she should know would be reinforced.

now keep in mind that by time mi reach home mi usually have bout 1 hour with mi pickney before mi pack har off to her bed fi guh unwind, relax and read (which is part of the HW the teacher mandate)

so although it SOUNDS like I do a lot of work with her, mi really nuh do THAT much with her.

Maybe she juss not used to pickney weh have manners (even though I did explain that to her in the beginning of the year) that likklegen is raised as such.

mi wonder if likklegen started to disrupt the class and call har one <span style="font-style: italic">owl skank</span> if the teacher wouldan feel better as that must be the norm

My perception is that many American parents do not spend enough time reinforcing what their kids learned in school. They probably never ask for additional homework for the kids when they are on break. They may not even take interest in the day to day homework aside from &quot;do your homework&quot;


That you yourself are in school, and that you teach likkle Gen at home is the BEST way to ensure that she strives to do better.

She is probably leagues above her class and the teacher is so used to the slack parenting that she can't wrap her head around the fact that likkle Gen is doing so well unless you deh a mek she study all hours of the day


Mi noh know what yuh fi tell her cept that you put a high standard on her learning and teach by example with furthering your own education.

bout yuh neva ask her questions about your daughter

sounds like she feel she one responsible for the girls education...


If more parents took the time, more kids would rely on them instead of only their teachers for learning...
