ultimately responsible for our children's outcome once they reach adulthood?

Someone mi know has a son who does nothing but play video games. The mother works all the time and the father is hardly home either. The school is constantly calling them in because the son is sleeping thru alot of his classes...flunked most of them...and now is not graduating...he does not care and has no desire to go to trade school or community college

I am of the opinion that they did not do enough..spend time with him..restrict his computer usage...help him with his school work..or get him professional help...

someone close to the family has countered my position saying that parents can only lead children to the water...not make them drink it...

In the case you just mentioned I would say the parents could have done much more to ensure the boy had a handle on priorities and responsibility. You can't just leave a child in front of a TV and expect him to learn values



In other cases parents do all that they possibly can, and the kids still turn out fool fool

I totally agree Bandanna...

and yes Skells as parents we do have a vast amount of responsibility to how our kids turn out. Then when them grown and on their own it's up to them to take whatever lessons you taught them.

I do believe that children are a product of their environment.

Hmmm this is abit of a tricky 1 skelly .. because theres a Yes and a No to that Question

Yes we are responsible when it comes to making sure they recieve an Education/ Warmth /Food and Clothing/ &amp; Affection ( to the best of abilty.. some parents just arent capable)

But responsiblity for the choices they make when they are ..old enough to make choices No! I dont think so.

There will always be the arguement is it 'Nature' Or is it 'Nurture'? and certainly once the child comes of age I will always say &quot;Nature&quot;
Adults are given Muliple choices when it comes to doing whats best for themselves Or re a given circumstance

And Parents shouldnt always be saddled with the blame if they consciously choose wrong!

Of course we have to take into consideration the grown childs Mental Capacity
But once that can be considered to be at least average.. good Or bad its down to them.

i find that most parents are not as involved as they should be...and are all caught up working to buy the latest shoes or gaming system...

I don't know about working to buy the latest shoes and whatnot...

I think it would be safer to say, in light of our current economic situation, that these parents aren't as involved cause they have to work harder at keeping their jobs so they can pay the bills.

Many parents now, who are fortunate enough to not be laid-off, are finding that they're working two jobs in order to take home the salary one...

It's not an easy choice to make: leaving your teen up to his or her own devices while you go out to work, but it's a choice that's born of necessity.
