why I feel to do this to you right about now

Well this is why I posed the question. I would be worried to a great extent about it all. But balance is needed cause I cant take overly dependent kids either. So, you want them to have freedom, but how do you find that balance with all the possibilities out there? And it is kinda hard with kids to just &quot;wing it&quot; cause it could be a final decision for them.

Plus the world is a very different place now than when I was kid. I had more freedom to run up and down the neighborhood because back then ALL the kids in my area had stay-at-home moms. Someone had an eye on you and you knew all your neighbors really well.

My friend and I were talking about where she grew up - a suburb just outside the city - that they never locked their doors at night so that the kids could come and go whenever they please. This lasted til the all moved out.

Now, even in that upscale suburb, a baby was snatched from an idling truck about 2 weeks ago. The mom just ran into the convenience store for 2 mins and that is all it took. It seems like a really tough call to me. </div></div>

Of course this tragedy is far from what we are talking about, but never the less it makes us draw our children closer. I hope they catch this kidnapper quickly. No news yet?

Perhaps the slow loss of Halloween trick-or-treating can be seen as a marker through the decades about our fear of strangers. My parents never went out with us from house to house. This year, no one came down our street, no decorations, and my bowl of wrapped treats took a week to polish off.

naah, this is a different story. Still too bad to read a similar story.

I live in Alberta.

They issued an Amber alter immediately after the abduction and the 18 yr old was caught a few hours later. The baby was luckily unharmed but that poor mom was villifed in the press.



But she did what a lot of other ppl do all the time around here. Only she paid for it.

You know, you are very right about Halloween. Kids around here do very little door to door business anymore. Most parents take their kids to the malls which pass out candy, have activities for the kids while mom and dad shop

I havent bought candy in years because it isnt worth it.

send your candy to my street.. they were polished off and we had to turn off the lights

3 costco size bags of candy all gone

yes we have a lot of SAH parents in our area and they were a watchful distance as their little ones roamed the neighborhood. the 10 yrs and older crowd came in packs so all children were safe and accounted for

I was out of the US for Halloween for 18 years, and just happened to end up in a mallon Halloween by chance when I came back. It made me sick. It was an evil transformation of something that was soo great... America at it's best.

I remember how cool it was to get a glimpse into everyone's house, and a chance to look at some you seldom saw up close. Old Mrs. Rutlidge would make little pralines, and we would devour them on her porch. The pecan tree in her yard was gigantic, and jumping off the big limb with the swing on it was a challenge that took me a year to muster the courage to do.

oh man forty! That sounds like another world for true

So few neighborhoods like this seem to exist anymore We used to have homemade treats at Halloween as well but again, everyone in the neighborhood knew each other so parents didnt fret about where you got the homemade goodies. And malls werent even an option way back when

The city I live in is <span style="font-weight: bold">more than twice </span>the size it was when we moved here. So alot of that small town mentality has gone.

Sounds hokey I know to a lot of ppl but I think it is in part why ppl are more leary of letting their kids out of their sights now. It just doesnt seem worth the possible risk.

My friend's daughter was almost abducted from their backyard about 3 or 4 yrs ago. They live in a townhouse complex and someone had the gall to try and snatch the child

Of course, now him and his wife are ultra parro and dont let any of the kids play outside with one of them to watch
The kids get serious cabin fever because of it. If they cant play outside they all just eat their way thru the fridge....

I mean good lord, a happy medium is hard to strike it seems.
