Oh MGEE you must be so proud of her accomplishments. There is so much a young person learns from experiencing this kind of bond with an animal and it will serve her well throughout her whole life.

Kia, you might want to look a place for girlKia to learn to ride if she is interested. There are far worse things a young girl can find that interests them, and more expensive too.

cho, kia, u can shop around enuh. it's nice to see girls of colour in this sport. it seems to attract mixed black kids, though in years past i've seen the odd chinese and indian rider.

i booked her for one week camp of horseback riding where she will either love it or hate it

she did get upset when someone told her there were ticks on horses

Kia, the camp will be a good way to test ur daughter's tolerance for horses and riding. and if she does take to it, then u can manage lessons round ur budget. group lessons are cheapest, and even among riding schools, u can get variation in prices. some girls outgrow the horse thing, too, so it may not be something u keep up for a long time.

but is far she haffi go fi reach olympic calibre, and so far, she resisting the idea of putting that much effort into becoming an athlete. she doesn't think athletes contribute enough to the world.

i did look up the person who rode for Jamaica in the beijing olympics - a woman named Samantha Albert. She was born in Canada, interestingly enough, but spent the last 18 years in Britain. She's in her 30s, i'd imagine.

also, there are up and coming equestrians in jamaica - i wonder what their olympic aspirations are?

You can always remind her of Tommie Smith and John Carlos in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics as athletes who stood up for something...and paid the consequences.

thanks, blackstar. ive tried to speak to her about how lots of poor kids around the world get inspired to do better because of the examples of athletes. however, i think for my daughter its that athletes <span style="font-style: italic">get</span> so much compared to what she thinks they <span style="font-style: italic">give</span>.
