Love & A Good Education

I beleive that Love and a good education are the two major things that parents can give their children. Any child in possession of these are getting a good head start in the world and should turn out to something/somebody.

My heart goes out to those children who are not getting either of these from home. There's a number of reasons why home sometimes cannot provide the love or the educational support but how is Jamaica as a nation supposed to succeed if the parenting skills are not there for all parents?

Lots of children are leaving school and they cant read and write properly. This is a waste.

We've all heard about the 'village raising the child' but I don't know if it still applies.

Do you think we should just concentrate on our own child/ren?

but also what some see as Love and Good Education could be different than what others view as the same.

May the OP list some examples or clarify further?

In my definition of love. It is to make the child feel loved, know they are loved via praise &amp; discipline.

good education to me is the basics plus teaching children the ability to think critically and creatively.

It MUST apply. You teach your children how to be contributing members to society - that involves other people.....Parents can give you love and access to a good education, no problem.

Part of the problem is now noone can say a word to someone else's bad breed pickni without war breaking out

If any adult pulled me up as a child for bad behaviour, lord have mercy on my soul for shaming my parents outta street

So, if we are to concentrate on OUR children, that will involve the village getting involved, not retreating.

When I say Love, I'm referring to the positive expressions such as spending quality time with our children, talking, playing, reading, giving praises, giving encouragement and of course discipline.
It involves treating our children with respect and instilling in them a sense of confidence, self worth and pride.

A good education in my books includes acadamic excellence (according to ability), good manners, values and morals.

The sad reality is that not all children will be fortunate enough to get all of the above. Life's circumstances could present them with challenges from the day they're born.
Sometimes their own parents are the very challenge they face.

These are the situations that I find heart breaking. I saw a mother the other day taking out her frustrations on her poor son. He couldn't have been more than eight. It was so bad I wanted to intervene and report her to the police but I took the advice of my husband and minded my own business.
