School for the gifted and only the Gifted


He was 5 months old when he said his first words, and at a year and a half, he knew the alphabet, colors and numbers from 1 to 10.





The new Speyer Legacy School was started by a group of high-powered mothers — including Kelly Posner Gerstenhaber, a psychiatry professor at Columbia University, and Malena Belafonte, the daughter-in-law of the singer Harry Belafonte — who had sent their children to Hollingworth Preschool, at Teachers College at Columbia University, though there is no official connection between Hollingworth and Speyer.


Speyer currently offers financial aid to 11 of the 26 enrolled students.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Ten of the students are members of minorities: seven Asian, two Hispanic and one Jamaican.</span>

If only they knew. Testing 4-year olds then placing them into &quot;gifted&quot; programs is a hoax and does not make the child any more academically challenged nor even smarter than the average child. Sure there are gifted children but an 18-month old who can say a few words at 5 months, knows the alphaabet, colors, and can count 1-10 just means that the toddler had a whole lot of attention from pushy &quot;high-powered&quot; parents.

but some may just shut down if they are not challenged enough too

interesting they listed the jamaican as one jamaican vs stating african american. The others were listed by racial group

IMO not *that* many children need to be challenged so that they are set apart as &quot;gifted and talented&quot; and put into special programs.

Maybe we don't need to specialize school children so much. Maybe we just need fewer kids in classrooms, quieter classrooms, more &quot;rote&quot; work (yes, school should be boring sometimes), more recess or physical activity time.

gungo i think u mentioned that bigga peas tested as gifted. was he in any gifted programs? if so do u think they helped him?
