A rural schoolteacher, who was accused of breaking a five-year-old student's arm while administering corporal punishment last month, is to appear in the Buff Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
The name of the teacher is being withheld by police authorities. They have, however, confirmed that a report of the alleged abuse was made by the parents of the child two weeks ago.
Allegations are that on November 19, the teacher reportedly used a large board ruler to hit the child for allegedly kicking another male student.
But things reportedly got worse, as the youth later complained of a severe pain in the right arm, and wept bitterly according to his parents, who are now demanding justice from the Ministry of Education.
bruises
The child's mother told THE WEEKEND STAR yesterday that the day after the beating, a huge swelling appeared on the right arm of the child. She said that they had earlier noticed bruises.
"I was first told by the teacher that she hit him on his bottom," she said. "But upon questioning my son, I learned that she used a board ruler to hit him on his hand. The following Monday my son's father took him to see the principal, but he was told that it was because of his complexion why the bruise was visible."
But after continuing to complain bitterly about the pain in his right arm, the boy was taken to a doctor about a week following the incident. The doctor instructed them to have an x-ray done on the boys arm, as he suspected that a bone might be broken.
The boy was taken to Port Maria where the procedure was done on his right arm, which revealed that a bone was broken.
The mother claimed that after the discovery, all attempts to resolve the matter peacefully was shot down by the teacher. She said she then made an official report to the police.
wasting my money
"I was later contacted by the principal of the school, who begged me not to pursue the matter any further. This was the same principal, who had earlier advised me not to seek medical attention for my son, as I was only wasting my money," she said.
The boy's father told THE WEEKEND STAR that the teacher's behaviour was unacceptable, and that he is demanding serious action from the Ministry of Education.
"They are the ones, who are selected to teach and protect our children," he said. "My son is scared of going back to that school, and that should not be so. School should be like a second home, and such violent and inhumane practices are unacceptable."
When contacted, the principal of the school said that she is unable to comment on the incident, as the matter is now before the court. Checks with the Ministry of Education's Region Two office, was no different, as a senior person there refused to comment.
In the meantime, the boy who has his hand in a cast, has been out of school since the incident
