Daily Routines

The five-year old loves family mealtime; not so much for the food, but for the fellowship with the family. In fact, she'd rather talk than finish her dinner. She likes plain foods and must be encouraged to try anything beyond meat and potatoes. Start with salad and simple casseroles to expand her food choices.

Fives need lots of sleep and many will still take a nap. Serve dinner early and begin your bedtime routine so that he is in bed by 8:00 p.m. during the school year. You'll still want to run his bath and stay nearby, but he can pretty much bathe himself. He needs to be reminded to brush his teeth morning and evening.

<span style="font-weight: bold">The five-year old lives in the here and now, and doesn't comprehend the idea of long-term consequences. He has difficulty seeing a point of view that is different from his own and this can make him seem stubborn and argumentative. But, he is generally cooperative and helpful, wanting to please his parents and be good. He may come home from kindergarten talking about a child who is bad. This is a good time to help him recognize what happens when someone behaves badly and to praise him for his good behavior. </span>

All of the above .. But yuh cyan start this drill at 5 .. I strated this drill at 2 years old ..to dis day mi noh pick up toys and books behine here. When clothes tek aff an shi tek dem to the clothes hamper.

Lay down some consequence for not following through on those things Twiney.. noh mek dem tings slide.

Wendy ... this is my little helper who would clean up because he wanted to make mom happy (so he told my sister) he hit 5 and it is a battle but the food thing although we have always had a struggle has a different level of defiance than I have ever seen. So effective Sunday we are going to have a chore chart with rewards and consequences ... He's gonna help me work it out tonight. Or maybe I am just hormonal and things arent as bad as they seem.

I do not feel that you are expecting too much.

From my experience (the little i have), kids need concrete lists of expectations and consequences (within reason/age appropriate) if they choose not to follow through. I find that kids need, want, and expect those bounderies. The fall down happens most times because adults get tired and cant be bothered. I know it sounds hard, but you cant give up or get tired, not on the expectation or consequences.

If they know that they can get away with things, they will. Also kids push the envelope because they are supposed to. So the defiance is par for the course.

Do I remind kids? Yup, but the reminder is followed by a consequence for having done so.
