I see with the teacher. but what's not clear to me (in the news broadcast) or in his article, is if the school notified the parents of the specific issue with their child (not the general notification about the teacher's allergies at the beginning of the school year), and gave them a chance to rectify before the child was moved permanently to the regular class.



but i do see where him seh that him want doctor note bout that product is what causing the problems for the teacher, before him send him child back to school


what would make sense is that the school said the daughter would have to stay in the regular class until the hair product was changed..if them dont have another teacher to teach that honors class

I think that at this point her parents should do everything to get her back in school, and then follow up on whatever issue them have.

legally the teacher is under NO obligation to share her medical records with anyone other than her employer, if said medical issues may hamper/prevent her from doing her job. I will assume if the school sent out a general letter at the beginning of the school year to all the parents, then they have done EXACTLY what they were supposed to do as far as her records are concerned.

a decent lawyer would have told the father as much. so mek im gwan wait fi daht note. the incidents of teachers being allergic to products and vice versa is nothing new. the list that i get the first day of each semester (from the nurses office) would make your head spin. after it was clear that the general note wasn't working the school (usually the nurse and the principal) should have directly addressed it with the parents of the child. AND NO, IT ISNT THE TEACHER'S RESPONSIBILITY TO DO SO IN CASES LIKE THESE. If it was deemed that the parents would not comply (and sometimes they do not in these kinds of cases) the teacher is simply reassigned, end of story.

there is a math teacher in my building that is allergic to perfumes. the students and their parents were informed at the beginning of the year. few of the parents said the teacher was full of fawt and never instructed their kids to not wear the stuff while they were in her class. teacher came to school and had an asthma attack and ended up having to be taken to the hospital (via ambulance directly from the classroom). when she came back..she didnt return to that class (ie. group of students). dem was right "surprised" with the teacher's replacement. all kinna wheels ahn deals did try fi commence then.

like mi said...all ah dem adults deh in di olive oil scenario...sigh.

I think that at this point her parents should do everything to get her back in school, and then follow up on whatever issue them have. </div></div>

the video and article made it clear that the parents removed this kid from school and not the other way around. reassigning the teacher would have made the best sense. now how the other parents and students would've reacted....well...mi sure di offending product woulda chage fast then...especially if she is the only teacher that can teach the particular class

The video Blackstar posted had the reporter stating parents were notified at the beginning of the schoolyear the teacher had allergies. The video did not mention that the teacher was allergic to the child's hair product (people can have allergies to all kinda tings). The video did not mention the parents were notified of the teachers allergies to the the hair product on their daughters hair.

The daughter came home and told the parents what happened with the teacher and the teacher moved the child out of the honors program. Why were the parents not notified from the administration? This is an elementary school where parents do receive more notifications about their child's academic progress.

no teacher can do this. cah if it was so...then i'd been doing this from the beginning (please to notice mi really speaking specifically to the PROGRAM). the teacher asked the kid to finish her work in another room. her removal (from school and therefore the program) was her parents choosing.

again...they (THE ADULTS) are eediats.

But it was stated the child was removed from the honors program due to teacher allergies - dat was not right at all

the parents upon not getting a response from the school and its district removed her from school (ediat ting dat imho)

Let's be clear that we're getting only the father's side of the story. He is the author of the story in the above link and a brief mention in KIRO TV's newscast doesn't go beyond his version. The teacher isn't talking. The school district clammed up when the parents hired a lawyer. But when the district was talking, it didn't dispute the father's version of events and called the teacher's actions unacceptable.

Whatever happened to picking up a telephone and telling the parents to replace &quot;Suzy's&quot; hair cream with something less irritating to the olfactory senses? Better yet, identify what chemicals or smells give the teacher trouble and inform the entire class that, for example, paraffin-based products are a no-no in class. Instead, she singled out a student who already stood out.

Allergic or chemical sensitivities in the workplace rightly demand attention. If your perfume makes your seatmate sick, obey her when she tells you to stop wearing it. Teachers are especially trained, or should be, to handle all the smells emanating from little bodies, lunchboxes and whatever Billy's Mom rubs on his rash. Aren't teachers hard-wired to incorporate teaching with heavy doses of empathy and humanity - and an open window if necessary? There is no need to humiliate an 8-year-old by removing them from class in front of their peers. Would you want to go back to that class?

The girl's parents are in line for some strong quesrtions as well. Why was it easier to find a lawyer than a new hair product for their child? Are they so estranged from the teacher that they couldn't call or drop by to say: &quot;Listen, we've changed Suzy's hair product, next time you have a problem with her hair, hygiene or anything non-academic related, tell us not her.&quot; If they suspect the teacher is being less than genuine - and hiring a lawyer seem to indicate someone is suspicious of something - ask him or her what allergies they suffer from and whether they're under the care of an allergist. Federal healthy privacy laws won't let you get much more than that but its enough to determine whether this whole mess stems from a well-documented health concern or a teacher who doesn't care for certain hair smells, or certain kids. The latter must still be dealt with but it takes the burden off the child and her hair.</span>

i don't expect the teacher to have to reveal her medical history. However if the fragrance/ingredient that she is allergic to is some big secret, then obviously the parents would not have been informed. Else it would not have been a secret.

You can't keep it a secret and at the same time rationally expect every soul to conjure up some comprehensive list of products you are allergic to. I have never gotten a letter from school saying not to use X soap or Y lotion or Z hair product for any reason.

Quite frankly the teacher sounds like a pain in the [censored] to me. There are some situations where you need to be accommodated, but this sounds like a &quot;take a pill and get over it&quot; instead of expecting all of mankind to adjust to your malfunction.

White people sometimes smell of sebum (a woman in my team has that odor in her hair). You know!!!

As far as hair products go, this one smells good to me. I went on the fragrance thing because obviously this teacher would not have been combing her hair lol. If it is not fragrance then let us just go along with the plan that the child touched her hair and a pencil.

If that is all it takes to set the teacher off. then she is in the wrong line of work. The world is not here to cater to your quirks. If everybody else has to bend over for you then you are the problem.

When the child comes up to the desk to show her work, or the teacher goes by her desk (cause in elementary school there is a lot more interaction), she would be in contact with the fragrance

If the teacher kept her distance than it would be discriminatory.

Like the commentary Blackstar posted above, a phone call explaining the issue could have resolved this so easily. The parents could have taken the child to a beauty shop and explained the issue and a haidresser could have suggested products that have no fragrance for the girl.

Kia, I love you like cornbread and collard greens but I just do not agree.

this lil piece of hair moisturizer probably has similar ingredients to some shampoo and conditioners. IF there is an allergy then state it. I would base the house, the farm, and the car that this specific product was not stated.

Even if it were, I think people with issues need to accommodate as apposed them. I mean what kind of ting are we really saying? Just because you are unable to work with what the rest of us do on the daily, you think other folks supposed to try to fit you? I just cannot go along with that.
