My mother has sensitivity to nuff things and fragrances trigger her asthma.

Being in the room with a certain scent can set off an attack and it is not a heavy scent either that does it. e.g. The horses 1 1/2 mile away can bother her if the wind is just right.

The teacher may know many things that can trigger her allergies but may not know the universe of what her triggers are. There is one black child in the class who may use products that the teacher has not encountered before. That is where I am agreeing with the writer in the commentary that said a phone call could have resolved the issue.

But in a situation like this, I think it's important that the school notify the parent, BEFORE the child come home from school and announce (mistakenly?) that them get bounce from them honours class.

CB mi here wondering if them can move Adale teacher to him grade one class ... mi love her bad... and shi talk to pickney in class bout them issues but then shi talk to parents so like yesterday when him get 2 time outs I was informed and for what ...

As ILP said long time ...all of the adults handle the situation wrong. And the pickney still suffering the consequences while them throwing blame at each other.

I have developed sensitivities to various scents over the past few months, some as above -specific scents trigger sinus attacks, athsma etc leading to bronchitis and worse -spent the past 4 months on antibiotics, inhalers, nasal sprays, many days with lost wages, many costly trips to doctors and aggravation from boss for missed attendance. Four months of illness that was triggered first by an individuals hair product, then repeatedly aggravated by other's scents, hand creams etc. I am still waiting for management to remind workers to refrain from wearing certain scented products. I have had to privately ask certain people to refrain from wearing certain new colognes and deoderant - most have complied. If I find I have to work closely with someone whose fragrance affects me -I request a change in seating. (and my work area does not have windows, period)


I know of one case in a mandated 'scent free work environment' where the chemicals from two individuals (sitting approx 60 feet from each other) wearing two different UNscented products mixed in the air and triggered a severe allergic reaction in a co-worker.


This case definitely should have been handled differently, but wasn't.

The black community in Seattle, Washington is in an uproar over an eight-year old child that was removed from her school because of the oil she uses in her hair.

According to the Seattle Times, the little girl is the only black child in her advanced placement class at Thurgood Marshall Elementary.

The child’s hair oil is a popular moisturizer called Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizing Hair Lotion. Somehow, this light oil overwhelmed her teacher and she was sent out of the classroom late last month. She was moved to the hallway, then to another class. Since the incident, the girl has been home for two weeks at her parents' behest.

According to the recent Seattle Times report, Charles Mudede, the girl's father, said the situation escalated because no one at Thurgood Marshall Elementary or the school district would answer his questions about what happened in his daughter's classroom - and why.

Among them: Why did the teacher think the problem was his daughter's hair? Why hadn't the school called the parents? How could the girl return to her own class if they didn't first figure out what had made the teacher sick? What investigation was being done to pinpoint the source of the problem? And, finally, why did the school seem oblivious to the racial overtones of a white teacher singling out her only black student?

That lack of clarity has left the child's parents with an eight-year-old's version of events and concerns their daughter would be left feeling diminished, the paper said.

&quot;The issue I had, and still hold,&quot; Mudede said, &quot;is there should have been a little more cultural sensitivity in this issue.&quot;

He told the paper he has talked with his daughter about valuing the way she looks and about resisting pressures to straighten her hair with products in an effort to look more like her white classmates.

On the surface, the removal of an 8-year-old African-American girl from her classroom had to do with a hair product and her teacher's physical reaction to it.
But for her parents, the incident that has kept the girl out of Seattle's Thurgood Marshall Elementary School for two weeks is a lesson in what can happen when people won't communicate.
Charles Mudede said he had a lot of questions when his daughter, the only black child in her advanced-placement class, came home from school last month and announced her teacher made her leave the classroom because the girl's hair was making the teacher sick.
The girl was moved to the hallway, then another class.
Why did the teacher think the problem was his daughter's hair? Why hadn't the school called the parents? How could the girl return to her own class if they didn't first figure out what had made the teacher sick?

KING-TV reported that parents in this particular class were told at the beginning of the year the teacher had allergies.

But, she added, &quot;our goal is to make sure the student returns to school. The parents have, so far, not wanted to put her back in school. They want to be sure everything is resolved to their satisfaction.&quot;

When your sensitivity is that great, you can't go anywhere lots of people congregate or even take the plane or public transport, can you?
