Mi is very Pee'd Off

So mi did a talk wid smaddy wha day and by chance dem tell me dat dem nat feeling well and dem dacta closing ar practice and she haffi go fine new dacta
So sayka mi kno some a de dacta dem miask ar a which dacta ongle fe fine out sey is de same dacta dat Bre go to.

So mi cawl de dacta affice dis mawnin and ongle fe fine out sey tomorrow is ar lass day.
so mi ask bout Bre records so the receptionist tel me dat dem is at a medical record storage and she gi mi a numba fe call and sey dem wi sen the records to me.

So mi cawl and leff message as the recording sey mi fe do and bout and hour later mi get a call back fram the record place.
Dem sey the records wont be ready til en a month and dem wi cawl mi back den.

So one mine sey mi fe ask the man if there is a charge fe de records and him sey yes so mi ask him how much and him sey him noh know yet it depends on how big the file is. Unno see mi dying chrial.

If they are closing that doesnt make sense for them to be charging for the records...

She (the doctor) is closing her practice so she sent all her patients records to a medical storage place so in order for patients to get their records so they can give them to their new doctor they will have to pay the storage place to get it.

i guess it would be irrelevant to ask how come the records are not digital records. then them could sen you it in email. them charging you fi sinting that you neva send them nu sound right, but that is just me.

Is the doctor still operating? She should give the patients access to their records before she closes...check with your health ministry people and the fact say is by the way u find out ... shi outa order.

Tomorrow is her last day...she is closing her practise to go teach
dem sey dem sen letter but mi neva get none
and the receptionist sey if mi want mi can stop by and collect a copy a de letter...that is not gonna help me.

What a bout all those old people or those who cannot afford to pay for thier records how will they manage
and the storage place charge by how thick one file is

But the badwerd the letter going help you? Poor customer service and them should be decent enough to at least call current patients and offer them copy of them records ... some of those records may be available electronic and your new doc can look them up so you wouldnt need the records place to charge you for them but at the rate them going you going have to pay no matter what. Hopefully Bre file no too thick so you wont have to pay too much (just because them know u cant do without it)

mi ongle hope mi can find a decent doctor as lots of doctors here are not taking new patients
mi get a recommendation but I wont be able to call her til next week as she is away til Monday

Mi a go call mi fren a OHIP tomorrow and see what can be done about the records although I heard that OHIP dont pay for them

Normally when a doc closes their practice they must by law, keep the records for 10 years (ie in storage which they can access to pass on info to other docs when necessary) - and normally they do not turn over the records to the individuals, but will release them to another doctor - for a fee.

If I remember correctly - the fee 'used' to be around $75 to send a copy to new doctor, but has likely gone up since then.

And here I was thinking it would be about $25-$30 to start I think the patient is being penalized when it's the doc who chooses to close

She could give you a what now? I don't even know how she fixed her lips to say that.

Good luck with finding a new doctor. I do not know anything about the laws, but something does seem wrong with this record storage method and process.

I have to laugh though. I can't believe that lady said you could stop by and get a copy of the letter saying they were closing. She better only say that over the phone and never to somebody's face. Woo sah!

Another doctor told me they have to keep the records for 20 years jus incase they get sued for something
She also said the doctor knew that she was closing she should have copied all the records and give them to the patients.

Well she will still be working as she is goinna teach so if mi hafi pay any big money fe dem records mi a go report ar baxcide to the CMA.

Technically the records are not yours although they are about you.

They are the property of the Dr. and I am almost sure that she would have charged you even if you could have come to the office to pick them up. May have been a pro rated fee, but one they are turned over to a &quot;Medical Storage&quot; facility then its all about the $$$$ and how much you want the information.
Some Doctors will ONLY turn over medical files to another Medical Professional.

Can you imagine if she had a very large practice, how much it would have cost her to copy all the records, because she cannot pass on the original files to the patients.

Sometimes its a matter of knowing your clientale and how much they can pay to get the records.

What mi noh quite get is why shi neva give people a chance to find a Doctor and then have the records transfers to the new Doc. My Dentist told me she was retiring the end of this year so I have a new Dentist as of Feb and the records were forwarded to the new Dentist through whatever process they use.

I am not understanding why a 3rd party was introduced.
