It start already...

So number 1 started sch recently...she is in a class of 17...15 girls and 2 boys.. poor boys anyways....all di girls in her class are...er....white.....and already she is asking me to make her hair straight.

I do blow dry her hair (with minimal heat) on occasion and get it somewhat straighter...but I think she is thinking of bone straight hair like most of her new friends....

she is only 3! I never thought I would have to deal with this til she was older...maybe by 1st grade or so...

I do reiterate that she is a beautiful little girl and her hair is beautiful as it is....so should I also explain to her the whole color difference thing and why her hair is not straight like her other friends or should I just leave it alone? :sigh:

i say explain to her how and why ppl have different hair etc. you can even use urself as an example. i know u wear yours straight but the texture is different than hers. show her that....neways the experts dem soon come....u could even show her some pics of the other likkle likkle pickey dem weh she used to and point out how everbody hair diff and dem all beautiful in dem own way. could even talk bout how di likkle white pickney dem all have diff color hair.....etc

nope it is no big deal at that age..

tell her and show her how everyone is different and they all get along

keep telling her she has beautiful hair and how boring it is to have hair like anyone else's

I realize that what I say isnt really going to make you feel better, skelly, but trust that what your daughter is saying/experiencing is rather normal. Normal in the sense that kids naturally want to "fit in" with peers. Once kids begin to notice who/what is around them...to fit in they will do what needs to be done (clothing, speech, physical features [ie. hair], musical tastes). Although, kids love there parents and trust there parents (for the most part), they tend to value what there peers think/feel most. It is kind of how they figure things out. A natural part of the process of growing.

Continue to let her know that she is beautiful the way she is. That she is can "fit in" in other ways (clothing, music, sports, talent). She will come around.

Now you might ask: Weh ILP get fi har "knowledge" from? It comes from years and years and years of teaching 3 basic types of kids:

1. Jocks - they live inna sweatpants, always have some kinna ball, bat, stick, karate/judo, wid dem.
2. Preps - they are trendy, always <span style="text-decoration: underline">have the latest</span> in clothing, gadgets, toys, etc.
3. Outcasts (dem name change to 'Emos' - them are the ones weh purposely do tings to make people know that they are not like the others. They stand out in the terms were they are loners/fighters, dress in all black, multiple hair colors, piercings, hang out in the theatre (stage), music room.

You cyan tell the kids that they are all alike. Dem will dun you down fi tell you how dem different. But they usuallly fit into one of the categories...just trying to feel like they belong.

mi hear unoo.....mi not too eager fi tell her anything other than she is beautiful....but ILP u r right....I can begin to show her differences...even between her and her sister there are differences....abi has brown hair and brown eyes and sarah has black hair and dark brown eyes...abi has finer straighter hair and sarah's hair is thick and curly....

i suppose the fitting in part has become important to her since she is in a new social setting and she will naturally fall in the preppy spectrum because she already is a diva even her teachers and the other parents notice it
