Police say a 12-year-old girl sexually assaulted Monday by a 16-year-old boy had met the teen on a social networking site just a week earlier.
The pair and several friends agreed to meet in a Pineridge school yard Monday afternoon.
Given the age difference of the two and the fact someone aged 12 cannot consent to having sex with someone aged 16, the sexual encounter is deemed sex assault.
Police also said alcohol played a factor
Child Abuse Staff Sgt. Leah Barber said it was not a mob attack but they have yet to interview the pre-teen to learn more about what happened.
Charges of sexual interference and sex assault are possible but not guaranteed, police said.
