High-tech help may be at hand for British kids who can't stop sucking their thumbs.

The country's first clinic aimed at breaking the childhood habit has opened in West London, according to The Telegraph. And it could be the answer to a prayer for frustrated parents tired of smearing their kid's thumbs with mustard or bitter-tasting nail polish to get them to keep their mouths thumb-free.

At the Metamorphosis Centre, thumb suckers can be fitted with a range of metal devices so that they won't get any comfort from indulging in their habit. They may also be prescribed a plastic &quot;thumbguard&quot; that covers the thumb and that kids have trouble removing. The aim of the new facility is to not just break the habit but to repair any damage caused by thumbsucking.

Its founder, Dr. Neil Counihan, decided to start the clinic after years of treating kids whose jaws and teeth had suffered due to long-term thumb sucking. While some kids don't have any health problems because of the habit, it can cause structural difficulties in the mouth for others – especially if it goes on longer than normal.

&quot;The problems start around the age of six, when permanent teeth start to come through,&quot; Counihan told The Telegraph. &quot;The first thing we do is educate the parent and child, and then work out what action to take.

Most kids drop the habit between ages three and six, but those who keep it up risk affecting their jaw development and the positioning of their teeth.

Orthodontists need to be careful about attempting to break a habit that kids use for an emotional crutch, said British Orthodontic Society chief executive Les Joffe.

&quot;We know that children suck their thumb because it has a pleasurable, soothing sensation,&quot; he told The Telegraph. &quot;If you are too harsh in trying to break one habit in a child, the risk is that you cause a whole new habit – maybe a more difficult one, such as bed wetting.&quot;

His advice? Parents shouldn't force the issue too much, and they should use incentives rather than threats about buck teeth. And, Joffe added, many jaw alignment difficulties are hereditary, and have nothing to do with thumb sucking. Good news for generations of kids who get comfort from a habit that, somehow or other, always seems to disappear by adulthood.
