So here is what disturbed me. As you can see there are about roughly 35 boys in the graduating class.

In a segment of the program each child introduce his/herself and say what they would like to be when they grow up. Granted, at this age you can only take what they say with a grain of salt (for the most part). When I was little I wanted to be a “Hair Hostess” and mi neva come close to being that.

Anyway, I still paid close attention to the aspirations of these young future generation. Of the 35 boys …about THIRTY of them said they wanted to become <span style="font-weight: bold">Basketball players,</span> with one or two in the lot choosing to play football. The girls showed ambitions to be Lawyers, Doctors, Astronaut, Nurse, Scientist, Movie Star, Dancers, Actresses, Policewoman, Teacher, and President of the United States (yes one girl said that). As you can see there was a wide range of professional aspirations among the girls.

The boys were stuck on being basketball players. Now, I know ‘tis the season of basketball on TV and like I said, you can take some of this wid a grain a salt but still I was disturbed. When the pattern continued, the snickers in the audience dimmed. No one was amused after the 4th male child uttered those words: “<span style="font-style: italic">When I grow up, I want to be a basketball player for the Lakers</span>.”

Wendy2 wanted to become an Actress. I am not surprised. Shi have di acting ting down pat. Mi need fi sign har up right now.

Wendy that is disturbing even if it is the playoffs smaddy muss want to be something other than a sports figure, esp the boys. I would be disturbed too cause it sound like the boypickney dem need fi learn more bout astronauts and dem ting dere

MG.. di odda part of me being disturbed is when some a di parent dem did a cheer an kin dem teet. But like mi seh .when dere was a pattern of &quot;I want to be a basketball player&quot; became evident, people stap kin dem teet.

I had a discussion wid Missa man on the way home and he is thinking they were just saying what they heard their friends saying but Wendy2 was quick to correct him saying, they had to think about it days before the ceremony. So obviously dem goh home an tink about it an dem all come to di same ting. Your question is a potent one.

it may be useful to look at the girls and see how they are influenced into thinking about future career opportunities, and by whom. The infuence on the girls may help uncover the influence on the boys.

An when they get to college some of them (boys) don't apply themselves well. I don't know if its any diff today but when I was in college most of the guys in my classes all were looking for ways to &quot;pass&quot; the class. They don't seem to want to strive for excellence and to go above and beyond. They were simple content with just passing.

This new generation of young men have to change their attitudes towards education and that is why their ambition to become basketball players was disturbing to me. All you need to do to become a basketball player is just &quot;pass the class.&quot;

A boy is in school 7 hrs a day.. who is teaching him? the teachers at kindergarten through HS level are mostly female. Add to that so many boys living with one parent (usually their mother) and where are the male role models to show them that they have to do more than 'pass the class'?

Are you saying the teachers are at fault? If so, I beg to differ. There is just certain things teacher can't teach. They are not responsibility for your child's ambition. The parent is. If there are no male role models around - so what? They all won't have male role models. My brother was raised by my mom with no male role models and he was taught to excel to the point where today he is still attaining more and more education (Mi tink im addicted to it). Barack Obama and many like him had no male role models.

If you are gonna be a parent.. be all you can be for your child - whether the teacher is male, female, black or white. A soh mi si it.

I am not blaming the teachers at all. What I am saying is like girls can see women in all facets of life starting with their teachers boys dont have that same privilege .

As a parent to a boy there are some things boys do that I have no frame of reference as 'boy logic' - his father and my brothers (when they were alive) were around to explain that is boy brain.

Boys like to roam and go all bout. What are they doing in classrooms these days? Sitting still with not much moving around except for recess. Boys need to do a lot of interactive things and need recess to run around more.

I see what you are saying. I did attend a Parent University seminar at my daughter's school where the topic was how boys learn differently from girls. And the school does implement different methods for teaching the boys. They went over stuff that they did for boys vs girls (that running around point came up). I raised the issue in that class telling the instructor that in JA we have boys school and all girls school and she applauded that idea as a good method for educating the sexes.

But aside from the fact that they had a curriculum that took those things in to consideration, it does not seem to have translated into them wanting to be Doctors, Engineers, Scientist etc. I still come right back to home!
