Yes, it is okay to call the cops if you as a parent believe that things have gotten out of hand. The system with the way it is set up, would rather you call the cops than to wax their behinds anyway.
I would only hope that a mother doesn't make the mistake of calling a trigger-happy, nervous cop who has no respect for people (especially if they are black), as I would rather shoot my own kid than to have a cop whom I call for help, to shoot my child.

does one of the kids have mental issues that causes them to be violent, aggressive or out of control, and you fear for the lives of your other children.?
