Work permits granted reaches 10 year high
More foreigners are coming to Jamaica for work with new data showing the number of work permits granted reaching a 10 year high.
The Ministry of Labour says last year it received just over 4,000 work permit applications and granted approval for 3,800 persons to work in Jamaica.
This was a slight increase over the figure reported in the previous year.
There were 2,300 new applications last year and 1,500 renewals.
A majority of the permits were approved for positions such as technicians, clerks, service workers, shop and market sales workers, plant and machine operators and assemblers.
In the meantime, a breakdown of the data on work permits granted shows a large number of the expatriates came from Asia.
1,700 of the applicants came from China and India which when combined with other countries such as Japan and Korea were responsible for Asia having the largest proportion of approved work permits.
North America accounted for 14 percent of the total and Europe 13 percent with expatriates mainly from Great Britain and Russia.
