I am just curious about something and I hope hat you can answer my question.

The contracted program that is set up for the Jamaican people to come to the U.S. and work in the Boston area for the hotel chain: How does that work? Do they pay for your own room and board? Do they provide the hotel quarters for you to stay in? Do you have to pay from your own meals? Please give me a general run down. Thank You!

I don't know exactly. I think they get monies docked from their pay for services.

You will have to write to the Ministry of Labour in Jamaica for information.

Hi Princess1, sorry I missed your post so long ago.

As far as I know, hotel workers are set up in furnished apartments for which they pay rent. If the hotel provides transport to work, the workers must pay for that as well. Food is provided from the hotel kitchen for lunch or dinner break, so they still have to buy groceries for other meals.

Those positions don't come easily, and I hear that some up front money to grease some palms in Jamaica is needed as well.

I know one person who has gone through all of the steps, the last of which is a health clearance, was cleared over a year ago and is still waiting to be called up.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to recall one of the issues raised during Katrina was some of the Jamaicans working in the program were concerned about receiving their pay (up to the point of when the hurricane hit)

Do they withhold the bulk of the funds until the contract is complete?

Not that I'm aware of, SistahD. They get paid regularly like everybody else.

They get paid regularly, but in some of the programs there is a lump sum payment that is given at the end. This is done to make sure the people don't run off.

Are you asking about a specific hotel chain?
I have many friends who come up and work in the seasonal tourist industry on Cape Cod and they even have to pay back their airfare.
There are some huge differences between individual employers.

In some cases only on an individual basis. I had a friend who went home early 2 years ago and when he came back last summer, they did this.

I guess to avoid surprises workers should ask all these questions before accepting the job in the US.

They workers usually know all the conditions. However, most just know they are going to farrin to make USD.
