Greetings, Brothers & Sisters:
I am an African-American educator seeking a full-time teaching position in a school dedicated to discipline, respect and academic achievement for all of its stuents. I earned my B.A. cum laude in Government from Harvard College in 1971 and my M.A. in Political Science from Atlanta University in 1981. For the past decade I have successfully taught high school Math and Science to predominantly African-American populations in Boston, Massachusetts. However, due to severe funding cuts by the Bush Administration, my alternative school had to lay off several staff members. I would welcome the opportunity to teach at an appropriate college or high school in the Caribbean. I also have extensive experiences in journalism, marketing and public speaking. Please help me to network with Jamaican eduators. Thank you.

There are many want ads in the local papers for teachers. Even though preference is given to local teachers, I am sure they`d look in on your application because as fast as teachers come, faster they go.
Pay is not up the ladder and teachers tend to use their qualifications to hop abroad or get into better paying jobs.

When I retire, I would like to teach in Jamaica. Probably at Mona. I've always wanted to be a professor, but I'm too much of a gadget queen to be able to live on a teacher's salary.

I've often wondered why teachers aren't well paid in our societies. There aren't too many jobs more important. Teachers in the USA should, in my opinion, earn salaries between $65,000 and $185,000 a year. Enough to attract real talent, but not enough to attract imposters seeking a fortune. It's embarassing that I earn four and six times what most of my professors do.

If they treat teachers bad in the USA, you can well imagine how much worse they are treated in Jamaica. You might want to visit a school down there and observe it for a week or so before deciding to teach there.

I might also recommend "Going Home To Teach" by Anthony C. Winkler. He went back home to teach in Jamaica after teaching in Los Angeles. His book is very humourous and shouldn't be taken too seriously. But it is incredibly insightful and is best read AFTER you've visited Jamaica, NOT BEFORE. (Trust me on this one.)

I have an auntie who is the headmaster at a prominent high school in Jamaica, and she highly recommended 'Going home to teach' when I flirted with the dream of doing just that. It was one of the best, most insightful and humourous books I have ever read. I highly recommend it for all teachers who look to work abroad as it cleverly explores the danger of imposing foreign ideals in an established, unimpressed [with sparkles]and wonted culture.
