Re: Black Middle Class in the UK
This week's episode (the first was 10 Jan and should still be online) compared the black middle class in the US with that of the UK. In summary: <ul type="square">[*]In the UK there are black people in the middle class, but no real black middle class[*]The US history of segregation meant that the black middle class lived amongst the poor and were conscious of that fact that they couldn't leave the less fortunate behind. This is much less the case in the UK.[*]US black leaders (business people, religious figures) play an important role in maintaining the consciousness and helping out lower class black people.[*]Black people in the US tend to marry amongst themselves, while 35% of British black men have a white partner and 25% of British black women have a white partner - much higher percentages in the US. This leads to a "dilution" of the black community.
I can't remember the rest...
In last week's programme, a well-to-do black man said that he wants his children to go to Canada where he is sure they will be better able to make a life for themselves.
