You will have to master the 'A to Z' in the job functions. Promoted managers are talented and dedicated people who have performed. No employers will consider promoting their staff when they do not show the capabilities in handling their current positions, as the higher the position is, the more responsibilities they have. DO EXTRAS
Be prepared to do a little extra and take on more responsibilities voluntarily and this will benefit you as you will learn more. When you are assigned to a particular task it does not mean that you shold not lend a helping hand to others. Do volunteer to help out in ways you feel that will make you more valuable to the team or organization. Refusal to do extra will deem you as a selfish and unhelpful employee. If you have a deadline to meet, find time to stay back after work to finish it. Most important, do not complain when your superior gives you an additional assignment to do. In most cases, promotion depends on whether you are able to garner the respect and trust from your boss. You will somehow be enjoying a cordial and warm relationship with your boss. Requirements such as work ethics, potentials and leadership qualities will help in promotion decisions for most bosses. Let the boss know that you are constantly putting extra effort in contributing to the company's achievement. However, it should not be misinterpreted as shoe polishing!
REFRAIN FROM OFFICE POLITICS
Avoid office gossips and rumours spreading. This will eventually tarnish your reputation and credibility. Be tactful of what you say when expressing opinions. Words spread around fast and you will never know what happens behind your back. The last thing you want is to find yourself being cheated a chance of a lifetime to get promoted, all because you were embroiled in the midst of a nasty office politic scene.

Learn to understand and adapt to the company's working environment. Know your ins and outs of your workplace or the department you are attached with. Try to understand that each of your colleagues has different sets of personalities that require different ways of handling situation and communication. Be well -liked and respected by your fellow colleagues, as they could directly or indirectly be influencing the course of securing a promotion. Your chance for promotion will also be judged by your working relationships with your colleagues and in certain cases, opinions from them before a decision is made.
BE PRESENTABLE
If you want to climb the the corporate ladder, dress and groom well. Wear clothes that fit and make you look smart. As for guys, do not forget to shave or put on the tie. Some will only wear their ties when they meet their clients. However it is advisable to put it on a tie in the office as this will project a good image of you.
Dress code differs from one company to another. For example, Microsoft allows their staff to wear jeans and T-shirts to work. At the end of the day, you will somehow need to look your best, even with casual clothes!
