Textbook contract goes to foreign publisher

Fed up with the poor performance of local publishing companies the Government has again contracted an overseas supplier to produce textbooks for primary and all age schools.
Cabinet on Monday approved a 64.5 million dollar contract for the printing and distribution of the books.

The contract has been awarded to Eniath Printing Company Limited of Trinidad and Tobago.

Speaking at Monday's post cabinet press briefing, Information Minister, Burchell Whiteman defended the decision to award the contract to a foreign company.

He said local printers had not performed up to par.

Mr. Whiteman also announced that the Government had awarded a 10 point five million dollar contract to British-based Ginn Education Publishers for the rights to publish mathematics text books for Jamaica.

Govt split on textbook contract issue

Education Minister Maxine Henry-Wilson has rejected the claim that poor performance by local companies forced the government to contract an overseas supplier to produce textbooks.
Monday the Cabinet approved a $64.5 million contract to Eniath Printing Company Limited of Trinidad and Tobago, for the printing and distribution of books for primary and All-Age Schools.

In announcing the contract, Information Minister Burchell Whiteman claimed that it had been given to the Trinidadian firm because local printers had not performed up to par.

But speaking with RJR news Tuesday morning, Mrs Henry-Wilson distanced her Ministry from that comment.

She said the award process was based on competitive bids.

Did Dr. Dudd or you not mention in a prior post that businesses in Jamaica could not continue to operate in the same slack manner for much longer, guess it coming to fruition. Guess with Caribbean single market, this was bound to happen. Trinidad ago flood we with cheap biskit and bag juice, heaven help dem. Tuff you know who own the largest printer in Jamaica, I would be ashamed if I was them.

The year before last it went overseas as well.
Anyway so much for the so-called Buy Jamaican Campaign.
The Minister of Dis-Information is walking around spreading all kinds a rumour and falsehoods it seems.
The Trini will always outbid us.
They are already flooding us wid bag juice and soda.

Isn't the Gleaner Company the largest printers and Kingston Publishers or Songsters the biggest book publishers?

I remember the first time it was a US firm and dem di gwan bad, but now is a fellow caribbean island and member of Caricom no less. Trade go both ways but do the local businesses even understand the Trini market.

Out of curiosity, is it the actual printed product (ie quality) that is not up to par or production time or price that is not up to par? I have a few books here published / printed in JA and the quality is excellent.

It is a money thing. The GOJ is broke and any little way to save a dollar on some thing they will find. Pity they won't extend this thinking to the millions it has used corruptly over the 17 years. Glitches happen everywhere, once when the textbooks were out-source the quality was not up to par and it was late on top of that.

All the CSME means: is our market that is of interests to their economy.
We consume more, earn less and borrow more, so we are the market.
