UWI receives funds to study Jamaican economy
Two point eight million dollars has been provided to assist the University of the West Indies (UWI)—through its Department of Government—in the implementation and completion of a research project.
The project is entitled Taking Responsibility: The Jamaican Economy Since Independence.
The UWI Mona Campus and the Planning Institute of Jamaica signed the agreement.
It comes against the background of the recognition that while there is no shortage of prescriptions as to what direction the Jamaican economy should take, little of the discussion is grounded on empirical research.
According to the University, the objective of the project is to undertake a detailed objective and incisive analysis of the critical factors.
Among the factors are the accounting of successes and failures of the post independence Jamaica model: including leadership, social psychology of under performance and crime.
The University says to date, the Project has activated an interdisciplinary research team of leading scholars and budding specialists, locally and overseas to participate in the effort.
