Is people a yard not aware of information you and I can find on the internet, I heard that hotels are complaining they cannot find enough manufacturers or crafts people to buy from, so they embarass themself importing stuff made in ______, now these craft people need to get together find a rep and start requesting what the demand is and fill it. Too dis-organized down there, and them sell some good stuff also, same with the small farmers, they need technical assitance with marketing and distribution. in this age of internet and cell phone, they can easily sell them goods without hassling dem self. Or trust mi somebody will figure it out and fill the viod so the world go.

well u have to understand that the beads, straw plant etc that use to be in abundance, the land it growing on is more an more being bought out an used fi odda tings...i can memba dem bead whe u use fi pick, bwile an use needle so string...dem had a red head...cannot for the life of me think of the name....i couldn't tell the last time i see the tree or dem in Ja

now the palm plant dat straw fi di handbags, belts, hats etc, i can remember people cutting it on mi fada land...one of our helpers use to plait the belts so she use fi bwile di plant eena zinc pan , hang it fi dry and den she plait a day time wen she a siddung wait fi pot cook etc...i learned to plait from her...den she buy raffia an sew awn flowas etc etc

dem likkle tings dere....memba Seaga started the company 'Things Jamaica" which Mitzie his wife was running at one time ....that was the idea behind Things Jamaican...to encourage the indigenous industries so as to satisfy the growing tourist trade...but PNP came in an shut it dung ....look at Crafts Market dung town which use to be a mussssssssss fi anyone visiting ...even Jamaicans going home use fi go Crafts Market fi pick up tings fi carry back a farrin fi mek dem house look like yaad...

but cheap tings from China and the inclusive shops knock di individual vendors fi six...plus those who go down and see the jewellery making etc as a way that they can fund their desire to live in paradise

my likkle lady can't compete cause she no ha no computa a har yaad or she might not ha fren who wi bring een tings fi har an di higglas sell tings dem bring een veddy high....

our people r being encouraged to be service workers in the serving part of the word....even di ones who fix up a snak bar, rent out 'rustic' rooms....likkle lata dem same renters become dem competition and so it goes....who ha more discretionary income fi fix up dem enterprise get di customers, cause despite the cooing over things quaint, the majority of visitors want the creature comforts of home or the creature comforts that the word 'vacation' connotes as far as they r concerned

i am tinking bout micro banking where i loan small sums to these craft workers ...it is done elsewhere in the Far East wid great success....might as well put di yaad money to use since di facety bank write seh dem a put it unda dormancy an a charge me dormancy charge plus GCT...dem baktrak pon di charges cause mi see whe dem credit it bak an stop do dat fawt....tink big people a damn fool eena 2006

couple years ago mi a go donw an mi boss sey npassing dat mi should bring some sand for her.....so on di airport i remember an si dem have some little bottle wid sand an shell inna dem...so mi pick up one...when mi reach back an tek it out look pan it it sey made in china...mi couldn't gi it to her

I am looking to go to Jamaica and do some investment. Open some port folios etc. though Jamaica is untested waters for me. Just finished my FA and MA (financial studies).

I think more expats should take page out of Mr. Lee's book. Need more expat to come together and buy these foreigners out that own all the top "blue chip" companies in Jamaica.

It is not foreign ownership that is the drag on the Jamaican economy,but wealthy,very wealthy locals that hold on to prime commercial sites especially in down town kingston. they won't sell and they won't develope it to it's highest potentials.
they just sit on it waiting for their offspring to take it.
they could have bought NCB or The bank bought by the Trini'S.
They could have taken over the cement company,but they would not,because it would require spending. they want to earn without effort.

Well Joemaican, everything has a price! There is no such thing as "not for sale". If not the present owners then the offspring inheriting will sell if the price is "right".

It's in the art of the waiting game... right timing, right person, right environment..

Joemaican and Morpheous, the Govt. is and has not encouraged investment by way of real estate and production portfolios.
Very high interest rates in the past made it easier to invest in govt. paper.
At 60% one could invest and make more than it would had you gone into manufacturing.
Alas! Service financing is one portfolio that entrepeneurs have done well in Jamaica. Millios have been made, in fact billions by the likes of Capital and Credit Merchant Bank, Jamaica Money Market Brokers, Pan Caribbean financing and the traditional commercial banks, like Scotiabank, FCIB, RBTT and Mike Lee Chin`s NCB.

There was a public outcry by builders, architects, contractors that Jamaica had not enough skilled labourers and to alleviate the problem they were contemplating importing labour.
Our people apart from being semi literate are not being trained to mix mortar.
If you listened to PM SistaP as she presented her budget there was nothing new that would encourage anybody to invest.
She now wants to pilfer the NIS National Insurance funds to finance education.
The govt. borrows from creditors in Europe to pay previous debts and to pay the civil servants.
There is no clue towards creating investment oportunities in production and manufacturing.
Davies the finance minister is a prime borrower and is running Jamaica dry making the next generations born into debt.
Every dollar earned, 65% or more goes to service debt and the interest keeps compounding.
Sorry, to portray such gloom, but it is better to be truthful than to pretend that Jamaica is making 3% growth gdp which is a lie and also Jamaica needs over 10% growth to make any significant strides toward economic development.

Why can'tthe builders train the skills themselves?? That is what is done up here. every organization have their training dept. They are just moochers. They don't even give scholarships well the mjority don't.
They expect the government to do everything for them just l;ike the poor and untrained people. AT least I cann understand the case of the poor,but when I was in Jamaica and doing business. I trained the majority of my workers,while other businesses tried to mooch them. I put a stop to that by paying them 50% more than the market,and you know what?/ they complained that I was forcing up the cost of labour,because as soon as the other workers realize that my workers were being paid that rate,they will demand it.That never happened,but their workers always wanted to work with my company,only they were not as well trained as my workers.
Businessmen in Jamaica are not behaving as businesmen . They are expecting the tax payers to prepare their work force. let them inport workers.That is whet they want to do,but they will have to run when the unemployed Jamaican force raise up in a riot as they are known to do when it comes to joblessness. Remember all the sugar and shipping riots?
It is not too difficult fir this to repeat.

Matter of fact with Alcan expansion and the gentrification of Port Royal Spanish Town and Downtown that is coming, Jamaica will need more skilled labor than ever before, average person better wake up and recognize this, H.E.A.R.T. is trying but you cannot mek horse drink water if them dont want to. I really wonder if jamaica's current method of collecting economic information is not capturing all these bright spots in the economy.

but u see Kingston 20 at the heart of this issue r the Jamaicans themselves...
those who have the funds, r ongle willing to invest when the interest rates r high because despite wat they have accumulated over the years, it is still not enuff

and u have the shortsighted politicians who continue to do the people a disservice...on the one hand, they mouth the fact that a literate population is needed, while they make such innane statements as the one car, one gal, one cell phone comment to the people who need to have the idea of education inculcated into their psyche more than ever

the poor Jamaican of the past had the steadfast idea that education was the way for their children, which is why the current crop of 'leaders' in Jamaica across the board, have for the most part, humble beginnings....they were able to jump in when the exodus of the 80s took place

but lo and behold they r now the elite in the said fashion of what went on before...and while a certain sector of children r expected to follow the path of education, others r now not being encouraged to aspire along that light....service , service , service is the hue and cry and that is facillitated by the decline in our school system...

service is all fine and good, but why encourage it as the ongle option and why r these kids being taught they will provide the service rather than being encouraged to be the ones who will provide a service...

i am amazed to see how our kids r being socialized along the line of American black kids.....entertainment, sports, fashion etc r the way to go , almost solely....

wen did the lawyer docta indian chief plus entertainment, sports, fashion give way to juss the latter

u know Doc it must be just the younger set who have had the bad governing for so long because the older heads who overwhelmingly work in some sort of govament job , r foreva taking course after course after bloody course, because with each, they can garner an incremental raise....that is how they get to make their salaries stretch..the day that the government, the largest employer on a lot of levels, stops doing that, many will suffer additionally...it is real wen i say that they rely on the travelling, inservice pay etc that they get

i jest with some people i know who work for government, of course not as a Minister of anyone in direct patronage line [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img], but the rank and file , so to speak, and this is how they can afford to live after how many years in their line of work...can't afford to leave the job and the job can't afford dem to live

That is a very broad statement Dr. mi know lumpens love fi wait fi hand out but the typical jamaican just looking for a chance why yu think so much 'certificate' schools popping up all over Jamaica, did you see the last story in Life and Debt when that lady and her freinds took land in inner city and were farming it, and she said all them need is a chance, the look of pride and resolve in her face typifies the average jamaican to me. I believe the country need a national strategy involving the Govt, public sector and financial institutions, where they determine which industries and sectors to persue, identify them, then communicate effectively to the populace, mi noh have the answer fi jamaica, but mi tink our country badly needs a SWOT analysis, 1)Strenghts 2)Weaknesses 3)Opportunities 4)Threats and move on from there using the singapore or irish model, which is where I think the MOU idea from.

you sure seh a Jamaican kids, yu see mi have cousins dung deh who follow the latest trends and stuff but to actually pursue a real career in music or sports dem know reality. Chances are is the poor youth with no other way or means look to the music ting or sports as a way out, how jamaica set up yu really have fi be good/talented fi get a bly, american kids mi see all middle income pickney a chat fawt bout NBA/NFL or rapper, like that is the only choice. naw man mi still was in high school when shabba release trailer load and while we rate what him was doing, mi never hear one youth seh, dat is what mi ago seriously persue. wi all did want turn politician so wi could a run tings and appropriate resources and big house pon hill, actually i think politicians are still the major celebrities in Jamaica. Yu tink Sean Paul can draw crowd like seh a Seaga or Portia, naw man. Asafa vs PJ, naw man cant happen a yard still.
