Another decline for apparel industry
There is more worrying news coming from the local apparel industry.
Data from the Planning Institute of Jamaica, PIOJ, show the sector suffered its 10th year of decline in 2005.
Total earnings from apparel exports continued to nose-dive with exports falling by 82 percent to 37 million US dollars.
During the year, the 807 garment programme ceased operations.
The PIOJ says the fall-off continued despite initiatives to aid the industry such as the Caribbean Basin Trade Partnership Act.
It's reported that the industry was also affected by the cessation of apparel exports to the United States and Europe by two key exporters due to high operational costs.
Apparel exports to the US and Europe fell by 50 percent and 98 percent respectively.
