Online Degrees

Are they any good? Are they respected by companies? Do they really offer an edge?

I could imagine the higher the degree the more it is expected to be from a traditional institution. But that might just be me.

There are some known diploma mills, but plenty of highly respected colleges offer online degree programs.

Initially, I thought the learning would be tainted. But the more I participate in this and other online communities, I realize that I do learn a lot. Consider some of the serious debates that have taken place here. And most of us are here primarily for communication, this isn't an institute of higher learning, but so much information is shared here....its staggering.

Sukuna, I would think your statement.... "could imagine the higher the degree the more it is expected to be from a traditional institution" ....would be just the opposite.

The higher you go in education,the more you learn from your classmates, and your own personal research. The professor is merely a guide, a source of information, and another student in the class.

so you really think somebody who has studied for a masters or even an online doctorate(phd/dsc) would gain the same recognition as one that did traditionally?
I mean the institutions offer a certain quality marker.

If they went to one of the better universities, yes I do.

The majority of the work for advanced degrees is completed on your own. The thesis, the dissertation, those are the items that set the standard for your degree. Next is having a distinguised faculty that students can call upon for guidance, encouragement, etc. With execption of the natural and applied sciences, most grad and post grad professors don't really 'lecture' in the traditional sense. Or is that not your experience?

as long as the university is accredited you really shouldn't have a problem...you would have to research to see if it is indeed accredited..

let me go further to say that ..make sure the University is well known in your field and industry wise...

Most traditional universities also have online divisions...so that's a good option

quite frankly I wouldn't do the online univ if they don't have a brick and mortar division..and where you don't meet with the entire class at least once a mth or once every couple mths..but that's just me..

I have no online studying experience to compare. but in any event learning has always been the same, where the greater part is left to the initiative of the student.
My concern is not the lack of physical presence but rather the acceptance of the degree obtained online.
so any recommendations?

use a recognized university..a online degree from harvard doesnt sat that your coursework was online

but university of pheonix online is a diffrent story

I think it would depend on where you're located. I would do as Geneva suggested : find a reputable, well known university in your city, and find out if they have an online degree...

the degrees are usually accepted...the degrees does not specify that it was done online...but you can double check this with the University you are interested in...

why don't you ask around in your field and see what the responses are when asked "how do you feel about online degrees ?" ...check with HR in some of the companies as well as some of the recruiters ..they should be able to give you a better feedback as to what the overall feeling is when it comes to online universities...can't hurt to ask

Yep, they do...dem have one right across the street from where I work. Couple people here attend....each semester is I think 5 weeks long.

Yes, but this place is generous wid dem money for continuing education. Me tink dem is ovah $200 per credit...and fi wha? Dem nuh even have anybody wid a name pon dem faculty.
