You think so? How would losing any tourist to any other destination benifet Jamaica? All Inclusives provide jobs to Jamaicans. Losing the All Inclusive clientel would be a loss of revenue and jobs for Jamaicans. Addition by subtraction does not work in the tourist industry. If there was not a market for all-inclusives in Jamaica they would not survive. These hotels going AP or EP?....Some hotels might go this route but others would close down. Are all AP and EP hotels in Jamaica running at full capacity right now?...I think not. How could adding more competition be better for current AP,EP type hotels?
There's a market niche for all types of vactioners. Losing a certain niche would be well, just that....a loss.

It's the location of Cuba which could make it more attractive to the US tourist. It's virtually a boat ride from Key West. High speed ferries and puddle jumper plane rides could provide fast convienient transportation from many locations in Florida.

I agree! Cuba, because of its close proximity to the American east coast could offer long weekend packages. They could corner this market. Heck a flight from New York to Varadero would only be approx. 3 hours. Not too bad if you want to escape the NYC winter for a three day weekend. </div></div>

Yes, it is possible that Cuba could put a "big hurt" on those island markets that have depended on American tourism for a large percentage of their profits.

Seems even without Cuba so-called opening up, Jamaica Tourism interests are a little bit worried about this season.

Hoteliers pessimistic about tourism industry

Local hoteliers have poured cold water on the Government’s positive outlook for the tourism industry.
An article posted Tuesday on the Jamaica Information Service web site said Jamaica's tourism sector is gearing up for an impressive performance in 2007, fuelled in part by strong occupancy and increasing length of stay by visitors.

In the article, local tourism officials said the number of visitors from Spain and other European countries have been improving since the opening of the Spanish owned hotels along the north coast.

Tourism officials believe arrivals from Southern European countries will rival more entrenched markets, such as the United Kingdom and Canada in less than a decade.

But with May shaping up to become the fifth consecutive month of decline in visitor arrivals, the Jamaica Hotel Tourist Association is not sharing the Government's views.

President of the association, Horace Peterkin say the sector will be hard-pressed to achieve real growth this year.

He says the latter part of the year could be a difficult one for the tourism sector in the wake of the forecast of an active Atlantic Hurricane Season.

I too have been to Cuba more than several times... Cuba is huge... larger than Portugal. Fifteen times the size of Jamaica. And it is unpolluted. There are no lada bags in the trees. The water isnt gorged with plastic jugs and the coral dead and covered with old plastic fishing nets. They have mangrove. Once they have normal trade... Jamaica gonna hurt bad.

Their tourist product potential is pretty great I would think.

I saw Castro on the tube tonight, and he really did look better. Almost normal for an eighty year old guy.

That does not mean that it will take away all the visitors from jamaica. since there must be many other places like it in the world and tourists still comes to Jamaica.
We cant waste energy watching what is good about others, instead of spending the energy improving what is ours.
That is Jamaicans though.
Others can do think as they wish.

We will see. I get discouraged about the whole scene. Another few years of hip-hop culture is going to be rough on the U.S, and now Jamaat Al Muslimeen is in Trinidad, and Jamaica has their own open "terrorist" supporter, I can imagine travel becoming more and more of a big hassle.

What is going to happen in Cuba, and in the whole Caribbean over the next couple of decades will be very interesting.

Could Russia repair their relationship with Cuba now, right after threating to aim missiles at the U.S? Could Venezuela move armaments into Cuba as a deep pocket pal?

I believe that Russia will be forming some sort of econonomic union like NAFTA with Venezuala,Cuba and some of the south american countries. The US won't welcome it,but they will accept it publickly,but will try to neutralize it covertly,because their is a new paradigm.
Jamaica will survive in all this anyway,because we have no other choice.
We cant't move to another state.Jamaica is all we have and we will have to mKE IT WORK IRRESPECTIVE OF THAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCIES.

Environmental group raises concerns over Negril resort

THE Jamaica Environmental Advocacy Network (JEAN) has expressed concern about the proposed building of a 6,228-room development resort on 361 acres of land on the Negril Peninsula.

The proposed development will cover a large parcel of land on Negril's west end, and the environmental network, in a statement this week, said irreparable damage would be done to secondary and primary forest of the most threatened kind in the Caribbean and Jamaica if construction of the resort goes ahead.

"This tropical dry forest includes small, highly specialised ecosystems, which are unique to Jamaica and the rest of the world. Negril Hill was an island for extended periods of time; hence its very special evolutionary history of which little is known," the statement said.

The group said an environmental impact assessment (EIA) conducted by consultants hired by the development company failed to provide a complete assessment of either the plants and animals on the site.

"The section of the EIA that deals with environmental impacts and mitigation is wholly inadequate, failing to address sewage or drainage impacts sufficiently," the environment group said.

JEAN also bashed a proposal by the consultants that coral be relocated to other sections of the coastline.

"The EIA proposes coral transplantation as a mitigation measure, but fails to provide any information on the success of coral relocation. In fact, according to experts, this is a risky and costly approach with a spotty record of success," said the group.

JEAN claims that the proposal to construct a marina and alter the shoreline, by dredging and building five sandy beaches, is a recipe for disaster and would result in negative effects on air quality, allow invasive species to take over the area, hazardous waste management, oil spills and storm water management.

The group was also concerned about the impact on Negril's cultural heritage.

"According to the journal of the Archaeological Society of Jamaica, there are five Taino cave sites in Negril, four of which are burial caves, and one of which had a petroglyph (carving)," the release stated.

JEAN also urged the National Environment and Planning Agency to call for a new EIA to be conducted and for sections of the site to be declared as conservation areas as well as the immediate stoppage of cutting and bulldozing.

One thing I noticed in this piece that is really true, and that is as soon as you pass the resort called Secret Paradise, you are into a unique and fascinating micro climate. I used to go out and just sit in the bushes back in there, and song birds would just start appearing.

Where this is proposed development is at the bottom of a long maybe 3/4 of a mile cliff that is a hundred feet high. Along the top is dense almost rain forest, but from the bottom of the cliff for like 300 or 400 meters is a dry but very very busy ecological niche. One person I believe owns all this property.

There used to be a beach there that was pure solid one piece of flat glassy smooth rock that went for about 15 yards. Pebbles and stones would roll up and down it making an amazing sound. That was plowed soon after the road was moved.
