Walter. it's extremely expensive to put on the concert, without sponsors the show can't survive
Foreign currencies trading outfit OLINT will, come next January, be presenting superstar sponsor of the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival, staged annually in the second city of Montego Bay.
"It's extremely expensive to put on the concert, without sponsors the show can't survive," said Walter Elmore, principal of TurnKey Productions - the event-planning agency responsible for putting on the show. Elmore, who recently made the announcement during the launch of the 2008 Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in New York, added that he was elated that the financial institution
has decided to support
the event.
The 10-year-old jazz fest, has never before had a presenting and superstar sponsor even though Elmore maintained that the category had always existed.
"We always had a category for presenting sponsor, I guess now, a company like OLINT is able to pick it up," he said; adding that Air Jamaica will still be attached to the festival.
"It's gonna be OLINT presents the Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival. they're not the title sponsors," Elmore outlined; adding that the institution
perhaps wants to increase its affiliation with Jamaica's tourism and entertainment products.
Wayne Smith, senior executive of OLINT concurred.
"In our estimation jazz festival is something of value to the nation especially in building brand Jamaica," said Smith. "Our intention is to help to lift the event to the benefit of the country."
Smith refused to give the exact spend, saying only that it's a "significant spend" and that, "OLINT wants no promotion from it. we're not a corporate entity,
but we're encouring coporate bodies to support jazz festival."
Asked if mobile phone giant Digicel's retraction from the event had anything to do with the OLINT contract, Elmore said the company's had a three-year contract and simply did not wish to renew it.
"I'm not aware of people pulling out because of the sponsorship deal," said Elmore, who mentioned also that Digicel had decided to disassociate itself from the event months before OLINT was declared a sponsor.
The Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival will be staged between January 24 and 27 at The Aqueduct in Montego Bay. The festival will feature headliners, jazz singers Anita Baker and Jill Scott; Diana Ross and a number of smaller stars including Hugh Masekela and Billy Ocean.
