Very interesting to see 501 (c) and 990 making appearance, is there something else going on? They both have their paid staff and free help.

I'm here...where would you like me to take this? I guess I am not really "following" what your saying.

It sounds like you were looking for a possible job, you were asked to volunteer first...then the job never materialized after all your work. Nah..thats not "volunteering" to me...thats not right!

I was refering to people who volunteer in places like Nursing homes, reading to or singing with the residents, or People who do volunteer work for the Red Cross. Our local YMCA has a volunteer program where people can come in and help handicapped patrons in a swim program. It requires a one on one approach and without volunteers...many of the handicapped would not enjoy their time in the pool.

those are the kind of things I was refering too. The people that do that volunteering are retired...dont need a job and just need to keep busy with something that they find joy in.

Does it make sense to give up your time for free, when its going to cost you personally financially?

I under the meaning to the topic that I posted. There are some work that requires a lot of foot work and also travelling to the venue.

Now, if you are following you would have seen where I am concentrating on finance and not if you should volunteer your time. All I am saying is that the time has come when 'volunteers' should get something financially, and that should be in traveling and for a pair of shoes, especially when it's a monetary fund raising event.

I don't know why people think I am looking for work, or was in one and is venting - I just post a topic for discussion that has an advantage and dis-advantages.

Like I said before, I make it a duty when asked that I get a pair of shoes or you pay me for my gas - its only fair for my time and sweat to do your work.

So, I hope I have opened some eye's - do the work and look where the money went - was it for the planned fund event? Who got paid?
How much did the fund get? How much did you get for the work?

When a military group of person is been asked to volunteer for a mission, they are been paid for the job and if he/she should lost his/her life, its all too bad and good for the mission.

If John Doe wants to know just how much of each dollar goes to the actual charity and how much goes to overhead etc., then the information is public, and John certainly has the right to support "doctors sans borders" as opposed to "united way" based on his research.

I tend to agree with you on the point that if you are volunteering to assist someone "MAKE MONEY" then yes you need to question what the money is being made for...how it is spent...how it is raised...and other specifics ont he budgeting process. But there are other volunteer opportunities that dont make money. Thats more what I was referring too.

If YOUR volunteer effort just helps someone else get rich...then by all means...ask for expense compensation at the very least...or tell them Sorry!

Personally, I have been volunteering my time, and expertise for many, many years, first through church, then through school, then for my own personal satisfaction that I was part of a group effort to 'present' community information sessions, entertainment, sports, or cultural events - all promoted on the premise of a 'purpose; (ie building fund, charity, projects etc). As with any paid job, I tried to ensure that my time contribution was a valid one, a job I have done to the best of my ability, with no expection of recognition nor financial gain personally.

Trust me, I too have put forth plenty of financial contributions as well as my time, whether through office supplies, equipment usage, utilities, long distance, transportation costs, cell phone charges, as well as up to 16+ hours per day. Once I started to feel used, I made it clear that certain things would need to be reimbursed, no more out of pocket expenses.

We all need to know where to draw the line between volunteering and being a sucker for someone elses' benefit.

One of the volunteer choices I made was to commit to 4 hrs weekly at a community police center - all we do is answer phone / direct walk-in enquiries to the main station, or where to pay tickets etc. Special community events will also have us provide safety tips for kids-bike riding; fingerprint kits for little ones, and provide residential security tips.

It is made clear when we apply that our time will in no way be of value when looking for employment within the department. (ETA other than recognition of volunteer work -period)

I also want to point out that volunteer opportunities can sometimes(though rarely) lead to full time opportunities or at the very least, allows one to use that "opportunity" as a past job on your resume.

I used a past volunteer position on my resume and still do, however at the time I volunteered, I didn't do it because I wanted it on my resume, it just worked out that way.
