Million Dollar Baby - Surrogate mom paid big bucks to carry child
Crystal Harrison, Star Writer
THE STAR understands that big bucks are being paid to women in Jamaica to be surrogate moms.
Investigations have revealed that women are being paid up to $1 million to bear kids for someone else.
Yesterday, THE STAR managed to speak directly with a young woman who claims that she was paid more than $1 million to carry a child for one man.
The young woman, who is in her 20s and requested anonymity, told us that she agreed to be a surrogate because she wanted to achieve tertiary level education." About two years ago, I met a man who is about twice my age who proposed the idea to me.
He is a businessman and he told me that he was unable to get a woman pregnant because his sperm count was too low.
I told him that I would have to think about it and get back to him and I did get back to him," the woman said.
She further explained that after careful consideration she decided that she would accept the man's offer, "I had a child at the time and I wasn't ready for another pregnancy but I said to myself that nine months wouldn't be that bad for the money he was offering. He deposited half of the money in an account for me and I got first-class treatment.
He even rented a place for me in an upscale community and I wasn't even pressuring him to do that. Before, during and after the pregnancy we didn't get intimately involved," she said.
tested and inserted
According to the woman, the man's sperms were tested and inserted in her by a doctor at a private facility and the process was successful.
THE STAR understands that the surrogate child is now living with his father, however, the young woman told us that she is a part of the child's life because the man doesn't have a problem with that.
THE STAR understands that in the United States, surrogates are reportedly raking in US$15,000 and upwards for first attempt and between US$5,000 and US$8,000 for follow-up attempts if the first effort fails.
Meanwhile, when asked about the church's position on the topic, a senior minister of religion in the New Testament Church of God, Rev Philbert Johnson, told us that the church believes in naturality as much as possible.
According to the senior pastor, "the church doesn't believe that we should disturb nature unless it is an emergency. Abortion, surrogacy, all these things interrupt the natural process.
The church doesn't believe in these things unless it is a case of an emergency."
Meanwhile, a popular physician in the Corporate Area, who also requested anonymity told us that surrogacy is becoming more and more popular.
"I know of women who get pregnant and don't believe in abortion for example, and they give away the child to someone who cannot have children. I also know of older women who arrange with younger women to carry children for them," the doctor said.
