When toddlers bite themselves and other people....what that mean?

Mi gwine breath and try remain rational until mi hear what oonu pros have to say....

me too....the biting other ppl was bad but twice now mi see she bite herself and leff teeth mark and mi wondering if it has so psychological meaning

something about not being able to use words to express frustration, anger etc so them do that instead

mi can only seh this too shall pass

dont have any real advice cause mi never guh choo dat praise the lawd

but most common advice mi see is to re-direct the biter to other activities (if you can tell when dem a get ready to bite)..of course this is the merkan advice

others seh to simply tell the biter no, we don't bite (in a calm serious voice)

them also seh don't mek a big deal or create extracitement bout it cause the biter will think is a game and continue to get a kick out of it and try get you to react

Yesterday...I was at a late meeting, so di current mr ilp pick up Hunter from school. Even though mi get written report of each days activities, eating, bathroom, naps, etc...mi still like to ask, &quot;How was the day? What did you do today?&quot; Mi always ask di current mr ilp what di teacher say about the day...im always give short answers, as im figure mi gwine read the report anyway.

Well yesterday when mi ask, all di current mr ilp said was, &quot;the teacher said Hunter had a disagreement with Tomas (mi change di pikney name), no biggie.&quot; mi inquire likkle more, but im neva offer any more detail. When mi go to bade Hunter mi see teeth mark on im forearm. Mi ask hunter how it get there, im seh, &quot;Tomas bite me. It hurt me, so i tell the teacher.&quot;

Mi finish bade im and go inna im bag go read im daily report. The teacher check off &quot;disagreement with another student&quot; and then wrote &quot;involved biting. Firstaide given.&quot;

Needless to say....I am LIVID

Mi go to school this morning and Hunter's teacher was out for PD, so mi ask that she call me immediately upon my return.

Well she called me back, but to report that Hunter was given time out. Why? Im bite Tomas.

Mi heng up and go ova deh....mi nu think them expected that...not sure why, as mi work right on campus

When mi reach deh...Hunter was already up and running around. When mi ask what di biting call was about. Mi hear that Hunter bite Tomas, as them was having difficulty sharing. mi not disputing that di two pikney get into it about sharing, as what child nu fight ova toys? So mi show har di report from yesterday and ask har bout di biting report. She say, &quot;welll, yes, the two boys were exercising their wills with each other and Tomas bit Hunter.&quot; So mi ask how come I wasnt informed. She claim seh she tell di current mr ilp. Mi ask if it was a call or at the end of the day at pick up time. She say at pick up time. Is after she see mi chess start rise...she seh them policy is to call the parent of the biting child. Well unless the child that get bitten has broken skin.

Then she open har mouth bout, &quot;that's why you were called today.&quot;

Mi tell har fi collect Hunter, as mi would be taking him home immediately. Then she start asking why mi going to do that? Then going to say, &quot;Kids biting at this age is quite normal...we deal with this all the time. It's when the kids get older and the behaviour doesnt change or gets worse that we have reason to be concerned&quot;

Mi politely sign out Hunter and now im here asking where is Tomas....

I agree with the teacher. BB was bitten once at daycare and it was pretty much handled that way.

and then when yuh guh school she tell yuh that Tomas bit Hunter ?

anyway BOTH parents should have been informed asap in the report as well as individual meetings to find out if anything else going on at home with the child.


yes it is somewhat normal depending on the child, that and hitting. Is a way of expressing themselves, and as the teacher said, if it continues past the stage/age where they should understand right from wrong, then is a BIG problem, which can lead to to being expelled from day care.

ILP yuh no easy a hell. yes i tink the bitting ting is normal for toddlers. dem will grow it out man. i remember being a vicious biter until mi madda come dung from farrin and tell mi bredda fi bit mi back

ilp it's pretty &quot;normal&quot; at that age (but not desirable). don't bother teach him to defend himself and mek the habit continue any longer than it needs to. Sounds like Hunter and Tomas are friends and is not that Hunter is being bullied.

I agree with you. regardless of the situation, test of wills, not sharing or a sudden tump dung from one child to the other out of the blue, they NEED to inform BOTH parents as to what happened. Each parent will then deal with his/her child accordingly and work with the center to monitor the children.

set up a meeting with them and ask them the same question bout how dem determine how serious an incident is. what criteria dem using etc.

Adale only had one biting incident that I know of and him did the biting but that pickney never take set pon him again... it was self defence and I watched it happen and smiled cause I knew he would be fine! Aden had a brief biting stint and I simply told him biting wasnt nice and never pay him any mind he learned fast that wouldnt get him attention as in 2 weeks it was over right now he fights to defend himself or territory ... Anyway as Gen say ask them those questions ...
