Abi's Update

So I had a meeting recently with the school's principal, her Sp Ed teachers, Speech therapist, Social worker, and PT. Abi has come a long way. She has mastered all her goals and after a recent evaluation she is no longer classified as having autism! She is now classified as having a mild developmental delay. I ask them why then did she get classified as autistic at 2 years. They explain that Abi has so many strengths she tends to focus on those skills rather than work on other skills. Academically, my daughter is brilliant! But it's the little stuff that she needs work on..like her conversational skills (she speaks ineligibly but her sentences are about 4 words long. And instead of saying "I'm hungry" she says "I hungry&quot. So these are the little things they are gonna work on next year. I'm proud of her. She really has come a long way.

Thanks all. I share this with you because unoo have been true it all with me..ITRW I feel so alone with my quest to get my daughter services.....the family still refuse to believe that she needs special help so I have been fighting an uphill battle by myself. Even getting services in the beginning was hell. All they wanted to give her was an hour speech. I am concerned about after next year because the district will want to scale back services so I am gearing up to go on another crusade for the 2013-2014 school year but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. Thanks again for unoo support.

Your baby is just lovely!

I've heard that some people, who are exceptionally smart, don't have have time for the niceties of language (I'm sure there's a scientific term for this, but I'on know it...)They've got bigger things going on in their brains, so they're not going to waste time with 'Mommy, I'm hungry. May I have something to eat?' She chose the subject and the adjective and it's enough to get her point across... I hope they don't push her too much...

I am so glad this is working out. I am praying that them coding Abi autistic was just so they could get her services. A horrible and ethically wrong thing to do, but it was done. Continuing with Therapy is a good way to go, but just remember that school shouldn't be the only place she practices what she gets from the SLP/A's. Exhausting, yes, but at the end of the day....RE-WAR-DING!
