Young men and facial hair

When my son works for me I insist that he is clean shaven. Other than that, he always has facial hair. He has a great summer job and he will be up North for the summer. Before we dropped him off, I suggested that he shave completely and get a hair cut. He said no to both and said he would wait to see what the employer said about facial hair.

I feel this was a mistake. What do other men and parents of young men think?

I do think that young men may run into some challenges and it may limit their career opportunities. Oh well, I guess the employer will need to address it if it is an issue. It would have been better to listen to Mom though, get a good shave and get your hair shaped.

of course in the corporate world a well groomed face (doesnt mean hairless)is always best.
personally i dig a man with facial hair. makes him look more husky. we dont know say Tropi like that baby face boy look.

These are totally unrelated topics. One is a ban on natural hair and natural hairstyles. With respect to the natural hair thing, don't even get me started. the other has to do with expectations that companies and employers have regardless of race. A white young person with facial hair would face similar challenges.

Arguments like this huh. You know, I am just not powerful enough to set dress codes for employers and prospective. I want my son to do well and not have the door of opportunity slammed shut in his face before he barely leaves the starting gate. He was clean shaven and had his hair shaped when he went for the interview....at my insistence. We may not like some of the informal and formal corporate dress codes and grooming standards but, until one is in a position to set up their own business, young people ignore them to their own peril. When I was with the airlines, I remember a White woman on course with me got fired because she changed her hairstyle between the time she was hired and when she showed up for training.

I do think that companies and schools have the right to set dress codes consistent with their brand image. They cross the line when they are racially based. For example, I hope Magic will come by. I notice that most of the Emirates flight attendants wear the same hairstyle. They do have a multi-racial team so there is some flexibility.



But clearly even the Black flight attendants are expected to conform to some extent.

Depends on the company and the sectors. I beg to differ with you, not MOST. You are out west which is even more conservative than Ontario so it boggles my mind that you would say most. One CEO with a beard after vacation does not constitute most.

In the sectors, I am familiar with definitely not and yes I have done work for oil and gas companies and not just in Canada. Did some work with a Canadian company and there were 300 people there....not a beard of mustache in sight.

My son's job is in the hospitality sector and I don't ever recall seeing hotel staff with full beards....anywhere....not even in Jamaica....not even in Muslim countries where some of the more conservative Muslims wear beards. I don't even recall seeing bank employees who were not cleancut in the Caribbean, yet alone Canada.

I even recall a Black young man who started wearing a dashiki to work at a wireless communications firm with a head office out west and it was a problem. We can argue that this should not be the case but it is. Until things change do we just say to young people do whatever you like and watch opportunity pass them by?

Hopefully, with enough experience, they can set up their own businesses and do their thing but everyone has to start somewhere and get a track record.

On a related topic, I did some work with a bank in Barbados and it was a fight to convince them that they should give candidates with locks a fair shot at employment. What eventually convinced them to think about it was one of the executives in the group eventually shared the fact that wher he worked before on another island, it was a fight but he convinced the bank to hire a Black female lawyer with locks. This was so unusual that it was even written up in the newspaper. She turned out to be the best lawyer the bank ever had. Until he share this, all I kept hearing is "We're very British, were conservative"...and that is the Caribbean. Unless he decides to move, my son will be getting his start in life in Canada.

No reason to be rude, renk and facety. I was in NO way rude to you.

You gave your opinions I gave mine backed up with specific examples. It's called a discussion. Your juvenile outburst shows that you can't back up what you are saying, "Most companies". I don't think so. If you can prove it, prove it.

My son is definitely not a Mamma man and there is no reason to be insult him. Now if I turn around and insult you back....as you deserve..... there are a NUMBER of things I could say to you based on what you have shared about your past, but I would never hear the end of it.

So if you do not know how to engage and have a civil discussion, feel free to pass my threads by because next time you facety with me, I really will let you have it and it naw go pretty.
