Congee/rice porridge is made and sold only in Chinese restaurants that have a predominantly Chinese clientele. You can always find it in large cities' Chinatowns but probably never in "Chinese" restaurants found in mostly white suburban areas.
I don't eat at any Chinese restaurant that doesn't serve duck feet with black mushrooms or dry fried chow hor foon.
I worked at a dental supply company and at Tufts University's Boston campus both of which were right in Boston's Chinatown section for about 28 years and usually ate in Chinatown four out of five working days. I really got to know real Chinese food!!
