I have a confession to mek - is Missa Jazz plant dem - mi jus go pick dem wen dem ripe

but is 4 batch like dat mi pick since septemba an more dehpon de trees dem

mi freeze some an mi pickle some.

next year I am gonna change things up a bit. No more attempts at the squash family unless I move to a farm! Those suckers are space takers.

these are the standard ones -
strawberries
potatoes
rhubarb
beets
spinach
lettuce
carrots
tomatoes

new to the game -
sugar peas
arugula
callaloo
raspberries

I'll probably think of more things to add over the winter.

Yup, I have been able to eat everything so far and they taste good.

Mary,
i thought I was the only person on Earth that liked arugula enough to grow it.

No one else in my immediate acquaintance will eat it.
Sort of like the anchovy of the vegetable world.

Not even the animals that will not permit me to grow much else will eat it.
The garlic chives, walking scallions and regular chives also are untouched by the chipmunks, caterpillars, woodchucks, squirrels.
The strawberries make it to the green stage and then disappear and this year what we thought were Hungarian wax pepper seeds (we pickle the peppers) turned out to be regular green peppers and neither my wife nor I like green peppers at alland we have a bumper crop that, again, no critters want to eat either.

Thinking about meshing in the plot next year and growing Scotch bonnet peppers just for the fiery hell of it.

Creamy Garlic Salad Dressing
(great on arugula)

a clove of garlic
a 1/2 cup of canola or veg oil
1/2 cup heavy cream or low fat yogurt if watching calories
4-5 tblespoons vinegar

press the garlic into a bowl add 1/2 tspn salt and mash the garlic into a paste using the back of a spoon.
whisk in the other three ingredients

This is also good on any green salad.

oh wow JC! That looks like a delicious dressing I am gonna save recipe.

I LOVE arugula but you are right, most ppl cant stand the taste of it. Kinda like cilantro, either you love it or you hate it. I eat arugula straight - just toss it into my salads along with the other greens.

I sometimes saute it with spinach and garlic with some good olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

I grow scallions (and marigolds) in between my vegetables that the critters like to eat and that seems to keep them away from the spinach, carrots etc.

Jazz, arugula has a spicy bite to it. It can be a zinger if you arent prepared to it but if you like anything with a kick, I think you will like arugula.

A little info on arugula:

Arugula is one of those great, simple greens to grow at home. Sow the seeds in a sunny location in succession plantings (approximately every 20 to 30 days) from early spring to fall.

Arugula performs best in spring to early summer. After that time, plant it under the shade of an &quot;airy&quot; tree (not dense shade), or under shade cloth. It is not fussy at all, although too much drought and summer heat will cause the leaves to be smaller and more &quot;peppery&quot;.

This plant does go to &quot;seed&quot; fairly quickly. But use the flowers in your salads and collect seeds for future plantings. And if you make your &quot;succession&quot; plantings, then the new plants will be ready as the older plants are going to seed.

dats scotch bonnet? I had those last year weh di nursery claim was scotchie but a nuh fi wi scotchie dat...dem did hot nuh rah doah...


mi did pregnant di whole a di growing season so mi neva plant nutten dis year...jus some skellion an thyme in mi kitchen
