long time mi waan ask yuh dis.

where did you learn to cook ? did you do a lot of trial and error in your kitchen ?

do you have a lot of cookbooks ?

i don't recall you going to culinary school, so how did you learn about the varoius techniques in cooking as well as all the terminology etc (that I have seen you mention on here).

I have read that the "joy of cooking" is a great beginning tool to master some of the different basic/more difficult techniques ? have you used it in the past ?

I learned to cook from the women in my family. I grew up with my grandmother and was very close to her. Whenever she would cook, I would watch her.

Also, my grandmother had many relatives that lived with us. My cousin "Fat G" (God rest her soul) used to do sum wikked cookin inna di kitchen. Mi pick up tips fram har too. Now my mom learned from both my grandmother and G.....I picked up tips from her too.

I did plenty of trial and error.... and watched plenty of cooking shows. From Julia Child to Lidia...... These people teach you the different techniques that you can use in the kitchen. I combined what I picked up from family and the professionals into my own thing.

Do I have any cookbooks? Yes, I have one that I just bought the other day.... I am trying to master Thai cooking.

I also have friends from different ethnic backgrounds. They teach me all about their form of cooking and I also incorporate this into what I do.

The Joy of Cooking? Never heard of it....but I am sure its a good book.

I also picked up some of my skills from my mothers husband....He is from another island too.

I use "Joy of Cooking" all the time, especially when I need to know a little more about ingredients: for example, the farmer's market had sunchokes (AKA Jerusalem artichokes) this past weekend....I checked with Joy for prep and cooking tips and whipped up a nice sunchoke gratin for Saturday's dinner....

Julia's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" is a classic
