I realize there was the scandal about what is in Subway sandwiches but other than that.


In Canada, sandwiches are popular for lunch both for school kids and to take to work.

My mom says when she was going to school she used to carry a lickle shut pan wid cook food fi lunch. For church, sandwiches were not popular either it was always cook food.

Origin of Sandwiches:

"The bread-enclosed convenience food known as the "sandwich" is attributed to John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a British statesman and notorious profligate and gambler, who is said to be the inventor of this type of food so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper.

The origin of the word 'sandwich' for an item of food may have originated from a story about John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. He didn't really 'invent' the sandwich but he may have made it popular.It is said that in approx.1762, he asked for meat to be served between slices of bread, to avoid interrupting a gambling game. This story may have been rumour or adverse propoganda, put about by his rivals.
But soon people may have started ordering “the same as Sandwich”, and the name stuck !

The 1st Century B.C. Jewish Rabbi Hillel the Elder is reported to have started the Passover tradition of putting lamb, mixed nuts and herbs between two pieces of unleavened bread. In the Middle Ages, people used thick slices of stale bread called 'trenchers' to double as plates on which they placed cooked meats and vegetables, a kind of 'open sandwich', although they probably did not eat the stale bread. The Dutch also have a long tradition of serving bread & butter with meat or fish (broodjes) or other delicious fillings & toppings.

When i was a child the only sandwich we knew was bully beef. and if u can call bread and butter sandwich. we never refered to egg and bread as sandwich we just call it egg and bread. lol. my mom would visit and try to convince us to eat peanut butter and jelly which we thought was just disgusting. we ate bread and jam. we ate peanut butter by itself but the thought of sandwich yuk!

tings and times changed. ja-cans are now well versed on sandwiches and pennes and wraps etc etc thanks to all the foreign influence. u can get dem just about neweh unless u deh up a some country back a wall place. i notice kids at my daughter school having them PBJ sandwich, grilled cheese etc etc.

the jacan in me still prefers a hot lunch to a sandwich.

Yes for sure cook food is definitely the preferred lunch in Jamaica and in the Jamaican community overseas.

In Canada, it's still sandwiches that most people take for lunch.

I like sandwiches and like hamburgers and ground beef (which many Jamaican men don't seem to like) they are a very versatile.

But still don't understand the "dry up ole" reference. There must be a reason for it since this expression is used across the board.

I'll never forget when my Mom moved and a lady on the building (White) said she would provide lunch. Well another family member who was helping us with the move was SO disappointed that it was only dry up ole sandwich.

I also remember when I was promised inflight coupons by Westjet and instead they gave me a voucher to eat at the airport. Well I asked for someone more senior. The lady came out was Jamaican and I have interacted with her before. She said "Wouldn't you prefer to sit comfortably and have a hot meal than just get some dry up ole sandwich on the plane?" She calmed me right down. I said "You ave a pint."

I can think of many more examples but those are just two quick ones.

well....breads, biscuits (wat u cndns call cookies, not the fry dumplin looking tings) buns, rolls, crackers etc etc jamaicans refer to as "dry" food or "dry" goods.

now neting a jamaican doesnt like is automatically categorized as ole, mash up, nyam bad, etc etc.

a canadian sees a dinner role and jamaican sees soso dry bread...

no it is not just Jamaicans who look down on sandwiches French, Spanish, Italians, chinese, greek... want a cooked meal...
