mi cyaan memba when u did the thread about saffron and all dem spice.

question: where did u buy them? mi a look fi berbere. mi see a pack fi $4.49 at this shop in Kensington, but mi no want so much.

pls tell.

you won't believe this, but there's a dollar store at King & Yonge called "Price War", it had most of those spices except the saffron. If you plan on travelling in the Bloor Street West area, there's a little ethiopian stretch from say Shaw to Delaware, you might find it there.

Thanks,Sue. I'll wander over to King and Yonge tomorrow, and hope to find berbere. not sure when i'm going back to bloor west, was there for the first time in years last weekend.

you won't find any berbeer there. your better bet would probably be kensington market. if it's not raining too hard, i'll head there at lunch and check out the spice store and see if they have it.

Thanks sue but no need to trouble uself. went to Kensington House of Spice last week and dem have it fi $4.49. mi was looking a cheaper buy.

Ingredients

2 teaspoons cumin seeds

4 whole cloves

3/4 teaspoon cardamom seed

1/2 teaspoon whole black peppercorn

1/4 teaspoon whole allspice

1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds

1/2 teaspoon coriander seed

8-10 small dried red chilies

1/2 teaspoon grated fresh gingerroot or 1 teaspoon dried gingerroot

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

1 teaspoon salt

2 1/2 tablespoons sweet Hungarian paprika

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon ground cloves

Directions

1. In a small frying pan, on medium-low heat, toast the cumin, whole cloves, cardamom, peppercorns, allspice, fenugreek, and coriander for about 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

2. Remove the pan from the heat and cool for 5 minutes.
3. Discard the stems from the chiles.

4. In a spice grinder or with a morter and pestle, finely grind together the toasted spices and the chiles.

5. Mix in the remaining ingredients.
6. Store Berebere refrigerated in a well-sealed jar or a tightly closed plastic bag.

no a no nuff mi a look, mi juss waan experiement caw mi still deh pon a no meat no dairy ting till July.

sue, u know something? i pulled out some old vegetarian recipes i'd printed off - and one of them was about ethiopian vegetarian meals. <span style="font-style: italic">u were in that thread</span>, when u name was still swinishmaid.

that thread was from <span style="font-style: italic">2002</span>. u were wishing me luck with the vegetarian ting. lawd, plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose...

you and me both missis. the cold snap left me basically motionless so i'm sitting here, typing and eating celery stalks till i lose the ten pounds i packed on eating chiccharone, empanadas &lt;&lt;--- let's just say grease sandwiches.

and when i googled the amount of calories in spinach them seh it bad fi yu caz it have 4 mg. sodium and nuff &quot;sugars&quot; even doah it's only 19 calories per stalk.

possibly u mean celery? anyhoo, ignore dem foofoo google results. celery have nuff other good properties fi counteract what may seem to be negative properties.

btw, headed back to kensington on tuesday but stopped at this store in chinatown and got a spice grinder (aka, pepper mill) fi $4 [wonder if mi couldan get it fi cheaper at the dollar store? )



so mi a go buy whole spices at this store in my neighbourhood and grind di berbere miself. mi a go try mek a couple vegetarian stews and injera this weekend.

good for you. the rule of thumb for dollar store buying is if you want longevity... don't buy the thing there.

and yes. i did mean celery.

i have to check our this berbeer misself. nothing better than trying different spices and different combination.

who would have thought that cinammon can goh pan lamb?
