Gathering wild stuff for the kitchen

Last Saturday on my way to Stoufville i passed a field in the middle of an industrial area and saw nuff ppl bending dung gathering things.

I assumed they were gathering dandelion leaves - i used to see them do it in the west end, too, along Weston road.

i've never gathered wild things from random fields in the city. Anybody here ever do it?

sometimes mi pass by and see one plant weh favor callalloo. mi wi hesitate, but then pass it by - somehow mi no trust dem caw demma grow wild.

well I don't know about "wild" but when I used to work graveyard shift there was no rasberry bush safe widin a 6 block radius of my house mi used to walk an harvest anyting dat hang over the fence

wen mi used to run on the beltline, in the early morning the old italians would gather the snails. there are plum trees, those are the only things i ever gathered. the plum tree in mt. pleasant cemetery bare plenty plenty plum. wanda wah kine a furtilizah dem use pan ie

yes...dandelion greens are good eating...i have foraged for them. you have to get them young, before they flower...otherwise they become bitter.

we also look forward each spring to fiddlehead season....young tender ferns, sprouting from the ground, on sandy river banks. those too...short harvest season, must be foraged just as they rise, and before they unfurl. I LUVVVVVVVV ME SOME FIDDLEHEADS. Ate them all last week...had some for dinner last night.



we've foraged for chanterelles at camp, but only when i have someone who is SURE of what's what do i do that.

ate fiddleheads just once, liked them, and often said let me check in with my mother if she wants to try them again, but never got around to it.

Tanya, thought u were going to say u wanted the worms for soup or something <span style="font-style: italic">considering this topic is about gathering stuff for the kitchen</span>. worms are good protein mi hear u can still try scrape dem up to throw on ur salad. j/k

i have. over at the gardens at st. james cathedral. they grow there in abundance. you have to go about 3 days after a rain fall, but before a weeding.

no. it's open to the public. not like i'm picking the flowers. not even the indigent listerine drinkers are challenged.

but they're not picking anything, they're just drinking in the gazebo. you can also get suckers from the city crew if you catch them there, when their clearing stuff out, if you ask nicely. good place for seed harvesting too,.

how u do it, tho? u have ur bag and u walk up to the garden and make like ur weeding but is callalloo u rooting up? and nobaddy ask y u weeding church garden?

mi is very fraidy fraidy i guess. me'da fret seh smaddy come ask me why and what mi picking.
