The history of the sausage goes back at least 5,000 years to Sumeria (modern day Iraq) and by 900BC sausage was consumed like popcorn might be today and sold from sellers in the aisles of the ancient Greek theatre.
Sausage was driven underground in 320AD when the Roman Emperor Constantinus I and the Catholic Church banned sausage because of its links to pagan festivals. It was in the regin of Charles I that sausage was divided into links for the first time.
During the Second World War sausage picked up the nickname banger because when fried it used to explode with a bang (probably due to a higher water content).
