Angostura Bitters

Growing up I seem to remember there was always a bottle of Angostura around our house but I don't remember ever really tasting it. I have a bottle that I keep to dash in a cocktail or something - but I've never really used it.

I hear that a few dashes of Angostura in orange juice or lemonade is very tasty. And I just read where you can add a dash to your morning coffee Going to try that in the morning

Ever used Angostura Bitters?

Yes I've use it, but not in drinks.
and I have tasted it on it's own too.
The latter you can only do once. it taste like pimento oil.
Yes it burn the tongue too. Yes I've tasted pimento (all for teh Jamaican challenged) oil too..

I personally don't know what it does to drinks.

since i can't temember having any drink with it.
On it's own it taste terrible about hot it taste in drinks.
that i don't know.

As Angostura bitters are extremely concentrated, they are not normally drunk purely, but used to flavour drinks and food; usually only a few drops or dashes are used.

Angostura bitters are a key ingredient in many cocktails. Originally used to mask the flavour of quinine in tonic water along with gin, the mix stuck in the form of a Pink Gin, and is also used in many other alcoholic cocktails such as Long vodka, consisting of vodka, Angostura bitters, and lemonade; and the Manhattan, made with whiskey and sweet (Italian) vermouth. In a Pisco Sour a few drops are sprinkled on top of the foam, both for aroma and decoration. In a Champagne Cocktail a few drops of bitters are added to a sugar cube. Bitters can also be used in soft drinks - a common non-alcoholic drink served in Australian pubs is lemon, lime and bitters. An approximation of ginger ale (as a drink mixer) can be made by filling a glass, almost to the top, with lemon-lime soda, adding a splash or two of cola, and then adding a couple dashes of Angostura bitters.

Angostura bitters are alleged to have restorative properties. It was reported to be a remedy for hiccups,[6] and also can be used as a cure for an upset stomach.[7]

Angostura bitters is often believed to have poisonous qualities because it is assumed that they contain Angostura bark. Angostura bark is itself not toxic but during its use as a medicine it was often tainted by unscrupulous sellers[8] who padded out the sacks of bark with Strychnos nux-vomica or copalchi bark in order to make more profit. Angostura bitters do not actually contain angostura bark.[1][9]

Angostura bitters will also stain fabrics and many other surfaces. If the stain is left to dry, it cannot be removed.[10]</div></div>

You don't understand what they mean by . That is one of the ways to keep secret active ingredients.
especially something as powerful as pimento oil You would be amazed the number of products Jamaicans buy from drug store

that are made from common stuff they have at home.

That is the secret of industry.

You don't have to publicize your special ingredients in anything, other than in the patent.

In Trinidad, they add it to fish stews, curry chicken, pumpkin soup, and other savory dishes

I have only used it in alcoholic drinks, but let me go downstairs go get some and add to water. Someone said in this post it is good for upset stomach cannot hurt to try. My stomach as been acting up since I came back from my last trip.

Well I had a dash in my morning coffee (black with kiss of brown sugar). Mmmmmmmmm.

Angostura has a strong pimento smell and I could taste a clove flavor in the coffee. According to their website, it is a 'secret' blend - just like our Pickapeppa sauce

I remembered a few drops of Angostura bitters being used in curry goat and rum punch. It was mostly used by cooks in T&amp;T as one poster said above.
