I use it for browning my meats and light frying - it's good for you and it gives it that special flavor that I associate with Jamaican home cooking.

Although basil oil usually stimulates, in excess it can have a stupefying effect and should not be used during pregnancy or on children under 16 years.

Since it can irritate a sensitive skin, it must be used with care on people with sensitive skins. It also has emmenagogue properties, so it must be avoided during pregnancy.

Extra virgin olive oil and that's it.
Can't bother with the experimenting with other oil.

I don't use any interesting oil. Mainly olive and the type is based on the usage. Extra virgin for things that require no heat. The regular when I need to heat it.

I have tried to do the canola for a while but I'm going to have to return to the regular vegetable oil or maybe the blend. Canola oil smokes too quick in my opinion. Maybe I have the fire too high but it just don't make no sense.

I picked up some <span style="font-weight: bold">chili oil</span> the other day and used it to roast some bell peppers..delish

The chili oil sounds exciting. I'd like to try it.

I had some grapeseed oil years ago but it was for a beauty treatment. Some kind of homemade facial thing if memory serves.

I have been saying I was going to try coconut oil. Isn't it about $200/gallon? LOL

For real though, I know it is high and I don't even see it in the grocery store. Where do you buy it from?

This is going to sound real ignant, but I thought the flax seed oil was just a vitamin.

I tried the sesame oil but that did not work out. Whatever dish I cooked, it was all I could taste. I think I made some broccoli stir fry thing.

I love basil so the basil oil sounded like a must try but now it's getting bashed all up and down the thread like it is castor oil. (I don't care I'm still going to try it.)

So does basil make oil or is it some other carrier oil that is basically basil flavored?

It is very expensive and it hard to find - I have found it here and there at some caribbean groceries and online ethnic groceries... is because of the expense why I only use it for browning my meats and stuff.

I don't think roasted sesame oil is really used for sauteing........maybe it was just too much in your dish. Try sauting with peanut or another oil &amp; just add a LITTLE of the sesame oil for flavor.

I have not been to a caribbean grocery in some months. There are quite a few along south cobb drive and austell road so I'll check there. I'll get my pockets ready because I do really want to try it.

That explains a lot then cause I'm telling you, the flavor was overpowering. Well, I will try it again and use it as a little seasoning flavor this time.

Basil oil is perfect for those times when you want a hint of basil but don’t want to overpower the flavors of summer’s ripest batch of corn or tomatoes. Try drizzling it over just-grilled bread, tossing it with steamed green beans and sea salt, or pouring it over a cold summer, soup, like gazpacho.
Yields about 3/4 cup.

1 cup mild olive oil
2 cups tightly packed sweet basil leaves
Kosher salt

Put the measured oil in the refrigerator while you prepare the basil. Bring a pot of water to a boil. Have a bowl of ice water ready. Blanch the basil leaves in the boiling water for about 10 seconds. Remove them quickly with a strainer and dunk in the ice water, swishing them around to be sure they’re all cold. Remove from the water and squeeze gently to remove the excess water.

Roughly chop the basil and put it in a blender. Add the oil and 1/2 tsp. kosher salt; blend until the basil is puréed. The mixture will be very frothy. Let the purée settle for about 30 min. Strain through a cheesecloth- lined fine strainer, very gently pushing on the solids to extract the oil. Use immediately or refrigerate for up to a week. For the best flavor, let the oil come to room temperature before using.
