What is Sarsaparilla.....Chaney Root

Recently I heard parents of friends from University (jamaicans) touting how good the stuff is, when I asked them about it all they would say it is not for me so I didn't get any more information about it. My Jamaican friends say their parents would make it but would not give them any and would also hide up the bottle and guard it with their life. Usually they say make it for the men folks.

So peeps what is this mystery drink and what it good for.....even though from the sly look on the parents face when they talk about it I have an idea don't know why dem hiding it....cho

Anybody have a recipe please to post it I gwine hunt it down when I go to Victoria this weekend, so hope someone tell me fore I leave Friday evening. Please and thank you.

In my day of drugstore soda fountains a drink called sasparilla soda was available. It didn't taste very good to me, a little bitter. It is made from a vine found in the tropics and has properties similar to male and female hormones. The original way to spell it is sarsparilla like you did. Google it and it will give you more info about it.

it's one of the ingredients in "front end liffta" "roots" "bad man agony device" and the like that people claim is an aphrodisiac. <<<--- that's why jamaican man have 20 baby modda a ball ovah coffin and 15 children while they face drug charges. be warned.

i think i read about it on a list of herbs not to consume if your pregnant. i tink it can use fi dash weh belly

TRIBAL AND HERBAL MEDICINE USES

Sarsaparilla root has been used for centuries by the indigenous peoples of Central and South America for sexual impotence, rheumatism, skin ailments, and as a general tonic for physical weakness. It has long been used by tribes in Peru and Honduras for headaches and joint pain, and against the common cold. Many shamans and medicine men in the Amazon use sarsaparilla root internally and externally for leprosy and other skin problems (such as psoriasis and dermatitis.) Leprosy can be common in areas where the disease is carried by armadillos (and in the Amazon, armadillos are "on the menu" in indigenous diets). Sarsaparilla root also was used as a general tonic by indigenous tribes in South America, where New World traders found it and introduced it into European medicine in the 1400s.

European physicians considered sarsaparilla root a tonic, blood purifier, diuretic, and sweat promoter. A Smilax root from Mexico was introduced into European medicine in 1536, where it developed a strong following as a cure for syphilis and rheumatism. Since this time, Smilax roots have had a long history of use for syphilis and other sexually-transmitted diseases throughout the world. With its reputation as a blood purifier, it was registered as an official herb in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia as a syphilis treatment from 1820 to 1910. From the 1500s to the present, sarsaparilla has been used as a blood purifier and general tonic and also has been used worldwide for gout, syphilis, gonorrhea, rheumatism, wounds, arthritis, fever, cough, scrofula, hypertension, digestive disorders, psoriasis, skin diseases, and cancer.

Just go to your closest Jamaica products store &amp; buy a bottle or two of &quot;roots drink&quot;....it has those two ingredients plus many more, all reputed to be a male &quot;tonic&quot; formula.

Thx. my neck of the woods do not have stuff like that unless I go to Vancouver. I also wanted to know what they look like the piece that Tanyer posted it also stated that it is like a cleanser or purifiyer/detox Let me go Google a pic.

Catadupa is 22 miles South/East of Montego Bay in the hilly interior of the Island of Jamaica, at the edge of the Cockpit Country. It's a place of rivers, hills, lush greenery,a strong variety of fruits, livestock, ground provision and sugar cane. Folk medicine is primary in these paths.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Chaney Root</span>, Blood Wiss, Mauby Bark, Sarsaparilla, Strong Back, Cerassie, Sage, Ginger, Peppermint, Cola-nut (bizzy) are just few of the herbs used by themselves, or in combination, to cure all kinds of ailments from aches to colds to nerves to blood pressure to blood purification to wounds and tonic and so on. The Trains were a highlight of the area and a major means of transportation, northward thru' to Montego Bay in one direction and eastward thru' to Kingston in the other. The special excursions each week took tourists from Montego Bay to Appleton and back. Catadupa was a unique stop.

Women would choose fabric and were measured for dresses and men for shirts on their way up by the many skillful dressmakers. The finished clothing was collected on their return. All in a matter of hours. Here they would also buy fresh, ripe, juicy fruits and local crafts.


I grew up with every thing natural. We got our food and medicine from the land, fresh every day. River bathing and drinking-water from the springs, popping up from under a rock or out of the ground, cool and almost sweet to the taste, was like life itself.

Our lifestyle was self-reliant, it seemed
like everyone had a function, a skill: Tailors, Dressmakers, Shoemakers, Farmers, Grocers, Barbers, Builders, Bush doctors, Teachers. Tinsmiths would pass thru' at times to repair our pots and pans.


Jamaican Ancestry

What's all this got to do with Africa? Our ways, customs and self-reliance are definite retention of our African Ancestry. Where is the world in this dance? Nostalgic on one hand, and forgetful and two-left-footed on the other. Catadupa is a slice of living that is at the core of human existence, health, consciousness and survival. The benefits of the glorious achievements the world has made in science and technology continue to elude humanity and robs us of our means to live.


It is always delightful when I meet people who experienced Catadupa and hear them speak of her with such excitement and love. From different worlds they keep coming, taking the sweet fragrance on their minds and flavors in their pallets and singing her praise. Yes it is Ja.jewel.

I often hear my jamaican granmama talk about this place. says she knew about it as a child, never visited though.

Interesting thing though it seems a lot of peeps in her age group, she in her seventies leave for town as she calls it, and never return to the rural place where they were born. They just hitch up a town and could possibly live a better life style in the place they were born.

The next time I visit ja I really must make an effort to go there.
