That brings back one particular memory and share with us...

My dish is <span style="font-weight: bold">Cook up Callaloo with Saltfish.</span>..

I remember this dish because I would never eat callaloo at home - no matter what my mother did I refused to eat it...

I joined the Pathfinders at church (kinda like christian Girl and Boy Scouts) and we went on a camping trip up inna some Mandeville BUSH!

Anyway fire ketch up inna de bush deh and the meal was cook up callaloo with saltfish and dumplins and yam and sweet potato... and let me tell you - I WAX off that thing you see - I don't know what they put in there but it was the sweetest thing to mi

When I went back home and tell Mama she vex with me - because she say mi go bush go eat callaloo and won't eat it when she cook it on good stove and give mi \o/

I am still not a huge fan of callaloo to this day - but the memory of that meal in the bush has never left me - it is to this day one of my best food memories

My grandmother was a wonderful cook. Everything she put her hands on was sweet. I used to stay at her house after school until my parents got home from work. By the time my mom came to get me, I had usually already eaten dinner over there. Granny did not care how much or how little you put on your plate as long as you ate whatever you put on there.

One evening she was cooking some meat in gravy. I can't express how good that pot smelled. I could hardly wait to fix my plate - rice with meat and gravy. Yum! I took that first bite and realized it was chicken livers.

Yikes! I hate chicken livers so I told her I wasn't going to eat it. She wasn't having it and told me that I was going to get a whooping if I didn't. For the first time ever, I defied her and said I was going to have to take the whooping then. She saw I was serious and just let me slide that time lol.

I still feel the same way about chicken livers. I'd just as soon go cook some grass or a piece of bush than let them anywhere near my mouth.

I figured a negative experience needed to be balanced with a positive one. It's a pot of corn, new potatoes, sausage, and shrimp, crab, or crawfish depending on the time of year. (Oh and as a bonus, they included turkey necks in theirs to help stretch the pot I'm sure but it darn sure tasted good.)

When I was in college, there was a Cajun club down the street that used to serve it free on Thursdays if you buy a drink. My friends and I were there every Thursday without fail nursing one drink lol. Those were broke times but really good times.

Whenever I eat it now, it always gives me that young, carefree feeling. It's truly one of my feel happy meals.

When I was in kindergarten I hated it with a passion...to me it looked like diarrhea My helper shared out a huge plate for me one day and I decided I was not going to eat it. So the Christine Columbus in me discovered the cupboard under neath the sink.

It was the first time in my life that I had been under there and thought for sure that no one had ever been under there. So mi scrape out mi plate and announce that mi did finish. Mi plate clean so til not even a chewed up pig tail bone was left to be seen.

Di helpa did suspect seh mi did a badulu her an she check di garbage but never see anything. Then later on that evening when she was cleaning up the kitchen she discovered the scrapings. She shared out an even bigger plate for me, took the biggest spoon she could find, sat me down, and force fed me.

Since that day I have had a love-hate relationship with stew peas.

I think I was about 10. It was a school holiday or something because it was mid-week. My sisters and I were sliding down the hillside, then running back up the hill, and sliding down again. Over and over. We were having a lot of fun and we were exhausted and famished! Mommy bawl out to us to come for dinner. We scampered up to the house and sat at the kitchen counter for a delicious meal of stew chicken with the tenderest green bananas Dinner was so good that we judged every single meal against that standard! From that day, each dinner was &quot;It cyaan nicer dan dat time when Mommy...&quot;

And you know what? To this day, my sisters and I, scattered across five cities and two countries, will describe a meal then add &quot;Cyaan nicer doah&quot; and that's our code.

Growing up I was a very very picky eater, at age 5 went to Manchester to spend sometime in the summer with my grandmother and she made wild cabbage(collard greens) with corn pork, dumplin, sweet potatoe.

She had me taste it to see if I liked it, mercyful fada the thing sweet she had to cook it everyday for the 3weeks I was there.

Got back home to Kingston and that's all I wanted to eat, my grandmother had to send it up every week with Ms Liz and my mom pick it up from her at the market.

To this day mi love mi collard greens

Ok this is an odd one. So I don't know bout oonu but growing up in JA i never see people eating any raw vegetables with or without dip unless it was cole slaw, I never liked vegetables to begin with so I pass on that when I came to the US.

So I was working as a banquet manager at an arena and this one day they had like a million functions going on and I was at work till after 9pm running up and down the stairs like a maniac and I was STARVING and my ulcer was kicking my butt, I needed food and i needed it fast!

So I go to check out one of the events and it was over and di hungry belly people dem nyam off all di food except for the veggie tray. Mi say is pure cauliflower , celery and broccoli did leff and I tell you when I start to nyam dem wid di dip it was like manna from heaven! Mi all go buy veggie and ranch dressing afterwards and it was not the same, but I started eating it from then.

Bwoy this is a mixed one. I hated and loved Saturdays with the same amount of passion. It was the day that began very early with breakfast and quickly turned into an all day session of cleaning &quot;from top to bottom, mi want every socks, towel, sheet, shirt, fi sort and wash! you muss begin with di whites. Bwoy [yelling at laga head brother] that is NOT how you clean wall. You fi go up and down inna straight line. You mussi want a lick. ILP you have di bathrooms dem fi clean and mek sure you use nuff hot water and pine in deh. Lawd God weh mi do fi have such nawsy pikney, oonu see mi dyin' trial? Mi try ahn try wid dem, but is like dem juss live fi dutty up di place. Like dem cyan see dirt. Eh, what you a tek out vacuum fah? Is lazy you lazy...you gwine use daht broom tiddey. You muss learn fi sweep ahn mi naw show you again. When mi was growing is how much brush mi haffi look so daht mi could sweep ahn you have premade broom ahn nu want to use it Were you are going with that? Alla daht is for di soup! Yes, di chicken, roast going in deh. Di pork done? Cah daht can go in deh too. Mek i see di carrots dem. Look at mi good, good money weh me tek and buy food fi feed oonu ahn dis gyal have fi nerves bout she ah dash dem weh. They ARE NOT rotten...they are juss a likkle dried out. It can still go in di soup.&quot;

About 4 oclock..the smell of soup start float through the house. And &quot;not one bowl gwine dish out till all ah di towels wash ahn fold up. Oonu hear what mi seh?&quot; Mommie always put 2 more dumpling in my bowl Lawd...what a soup nice

Daddy was never around on Saturdays Years later we kids found out that it because he hated soup and he really hated mommie's soup.

I too was a PICKY eater, everyting dem try feed mi mi hide pan di chair side a mi thought I was slick.

But everyone in my house did know seh dem noh fi even try feed mi ackee an saltfish. when dem a eat dat, mi a eat harddough bread an butter mi madda naw cook 2 different meals.

One day I went wid Daddy to a construction site an wi was there for hours

The worka man dem was cooking tings pan a fire an lawd it did smell sweet. so mi dideh a heng round di fire an a watch dem soh one a di man offer mi a plate an mi seh yes neva even know what it was, juss that there was bwile dumplin an bwile plantain

mi seh when daddy si mi siddun pan a block a wax off di plate a Ackee an saltfish him nearly drop dung, him a ask dem is wah dem do to him dawta fi mek har a eat ackee

I was about 6 at the time and love off ackee ever since .
