My grandmother was a wonderful cook. Everything she put her hands on was sweet. I used to stay at her house after school until my parents got home from work. By the time my mom came to get me, I had usually already eaten dinner over there. Granny did not care how much or how little you put on your plate as long as you ate whatever you put on there.

One evening she was cooking some meat in gravy. I can't express how good that pot smelled. I could hardly wait to fix my plate - rice with meat and gravy. Yum! I took that first bite and realized it was chicken livers.

Yikes! I hate chicken livers so I told her I wasn't going to eat it. She wasn't having it and told me that I was going to get a whooping if I didn't. For the first time ever, I defied her and said I was going to have to take the whooping then. She saw I was serious and just let me slide that time lol.

I still feel the same way about chicken livers. I'd just as soon go cook some grass or a piece of bush than let them anywhere near my mouth.

I figured a negative experience needed to be balanced with a positive one. It's a pot of corn, new potatoes, sausage, and shrimp, crab, or crawfish depending on the time of year. (Oh and as a bonus, they included turkey necks in theirs to help stretch the pot I'm sure but it darn sure tasted good.)

When I was in college, there was a Cajun club down the street that used to serve it free on Thursdays if you buy a drink. My friends and I were there every Thursday without fail nursing one drink lol. Those were broke times but really good times.

Whenever I eat it now, it always gives me that young, carefree feeling. It's truly one of my feel happy meals. </div></div>

aaaahhhh good times... good times... I remember those meals of my broke, carefree days!!

She shared out an even bigger plate for me, took the biggest spoon she could find, sat me down, and force fed me.

Since that day I have had a love-hate relationship with stew peas. </div></div>

I think I was about 10. It was a school holiday or something because it was mid-week. My sisters and I were sliding down the hillside, then running back up the hill, and sliding down again. Over and over. We were having a lot of fun and we were exhausted and famished! Mommy bawl out to us to come for dinner. We scampered up to the house and sat at the kitchen counter for a delicious meal of stew chicken with the tenderest green bananas Dinner was so good that we judged every single meal against that standard! And you know what? To this day, my sisters and I, scattered across five cities and two countries, will describe a meal then add &quot;Cyaan nicer doah&quot; and that's our code.

Ok this is an odd one. So I don't know bout oonu but growing up in JA i never see people eating any raw vegetables with or without dip unless it was cole slaw, I never liked vegetables to begin with so I pass on that when I came to the US.

So I was working as a banquet manager at an arena and this one day they had like a million functions going on and I was at work till after 9pm running up and down the stairs like a maniac and I was STARVING and my ulcer was kicking my butt, I needed food and i needed it fast!

So I go to check out one of the events and it was over and di hungry belly people dem nyam off all di food except for the veggie tray. Mi say is pure cauliflower , celery and broccoli did leff and I tell you when I start to nyam dem wid di dip it was like manna from heaven! Mi all go buy veggie and ranch dressing afterwards and it was not the same, but I started eating it from then.

Tripe and Bean
Never liked it never will.

I always used to force myself and eat tripe because I was told to eat what was prepared. One day during a visit to Jamaica, tripe and bean wa served. I decided that was it, I was NOT eating tripe anymore.

I sat and refused to touch my plate. My grandmother gave me the typical talking to. Time passed and my plate went untouched. I was told I could not get up until I ate my dinner. Dinner was over for evryone else and my cousins started clearing the table.

I was then told that I would not get to watch evening tv if I did not eat. Oh well I was just going to miss my shows cause now it was way too late. This happened when I was about 10, way before the microwave and anyone who has ever has tripe knows that if you don't have while its hot, forget about it.

Next threat was that I would not get anything else to eat so if I didn't want to go to bed hungry I better eat my dinner. HA, like that could scare me. If I never ate again for the rest of my life I didn't care that night.

The table is cleared around me, everyone does their after dinner chores to get ready for tv time. I was then told that I. Had to change my seat at the dining table so I could not catch a glimpse of the TV. No problem for me.

My cousin came and begged me to eat so we could watch tv together. His pleas fell on deaf ears. I sat at the table until I fell asleep. Finally my grandmother came and got me and told me to go to bed.

She never served me tripe again after that. I still don't eat that dish today.

...I hear you loud &amp; clear, Laurel!!,,,always wondered where those recipes came from....my mom used to make 3 different casseroles, tuna, spaghetti and chop suey. They were all OK, but the tuna is the only one I would still consider making (loved the crushed potato chips on top)

My mom &amp; grandmother were much better bakers than they were cooks (although my mom was not a bad cook)....I can always remember having homemade bread &amp; cookies &amp; pastries around growing up.....it's what I really miss now, living in Jamaica.

I do some baking here, mostly for guests but really miss two desserts my mom used to make....one of them called &quot; broken glass refrig. torte (cottage cheese based torte, probably with gelatin added &amp; then cut up pieces of different color jello folded in....maybe some whipped cream was in there too.....graham cracker crust...man, such fond memories! I've never made it since I've left home, but will one day when I can come up with the recipe or something close.

The other one is very simple, but delicious.....make a sauce with melted brown sugar &amp; butter, then stir in cornflakes. Place in bowls &amp; let harden. Then top with vanilla ice cream &amp; either strawberry sauce or raspberry sauce....OMG! that was de bomb!!

I've learned how to make some very good pasta meals (because of working in small, family-owned Italian restaurants) so don't need to make the spaghetti cassarole (no comparison)

Sometimes one of the &quot;comfort&quot; foods that I miss is a GOOD baked mac&amp; cheese casserole....lots of cheese &amp; nice &amp; creamy!!

Did ya all ever hear of dukanoo-due-can-ooo? When I was a young girl living in Jamaica, Mother was tought how to make this. We all were in on it as it was special for Sundays only. It is what I was told an African desert. Everyone was busy with some part of the preperation. I had grown used to trying new things by that time, but this was going to be cooked in a banana leaf! Let me tell you I had more than one after dinner and begged for them every Sunday I could get them. !

If you ever want to make them, use the coconut trash, mix with some cornmeal, brown sugar and raisans. Wrap them in a banana leaf and tie them with the middle of the banana in squares. Boil for a while maybe an hour. Has anyone else ever had this?

I love all the stories and I look forward to more.

Gots to go get me rice n pea, chicken and gravy a check. I'm definately gonna read this again when I have more time!
