how do you eat it? i remember posting about this about a year back when it made it's debut in the USA. how do you hold it? won't your fingers get all greasy?

I am truly amazed at the amount of ink spilled and the number of vocal chords vibrated over KFC’s Double Down — the definition-stretching “sandwich” in which bacon, cheese and sauce of some description bubble and ooze between two pieces of fried chicken. It’s as if Canadian society has completely lost the ability to think logically about food.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Yes, it’s unhealthy: 540 calories, 30 grams of fat, 150 milligrams of cholesterol and — most famously — 1,740 milligrams of salt</span>. That’s more sodium than Health Canada wants you to consume in a day, contained in just a quarter of the recommended average adult’s daily caloric intake. <span style="font-weight: bold">But as many news items have pointed out, aside from the heroic salt count, the Double Down is hardly a game-changer in the fast food industry. The Big Mac has the same basic stats (though considerably less cholesterol). A Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese has 40% more calories and 50% more fat. Wendy’s triple Baconator, with which we all seem to have come to terms, has two and a half times the calories (1,370), triple the fat (92 grams!), double the cholesterol (295 milligrams) and 35% more salt (2,380 milligrams).</span>

<span style="font-weight: bold">The Double Down isn’t even the most unhealthy thing on a KFC menu. That honour goes to something called the “Boxmaster,” which is deep fried chicken, a hash brown, cheese and sauce, wrapped in a tortilla and shoved into a box for some reason. (Did they come up with the name first?) It’s got more than half again as many calories and fat, and astonishingly enough, 10% more salt.</span>

So why are dietitians’ phones ringing off the hook about the Double Down? Well, it doesn’t have a bun. The chicken stands in for the bread. That’s novel, and we in the media love novelty. Put fried chicken, sauce and bacon on a bleached flour bun and you have a total non-story. Or, to put it another way, you have Arby’s Chicken Bacon &amp; Swiss Sandwich. It’s got 610 calories, 29 grams of fat and 2,400 mg of sodium. Sub out the bacon for ham on Arby’s Chicken Cordon Bleu Sandwich and you’re up to 2,780 milligrams of sodium. Boring!

Admittedly, a lot of the Double Down coverage has been in good fun. I’ve only encountered one expert calling for consumers to be “protected” from such products. The story entered a whole new realm of silly the moment reporters asked Ontario Health Minister Margarett Best if there was anything the government might do about the Double Down, and she didn’t tell them to buzz off. (“It certainly is something that we may look at and review,” she said instead, before quickly rubbishing the idea later in the afternoon.)

But this is society’s problem, not just Mr. McGuinty’s, Ms. Best’s or the media’s. Food has become a constant riddle. We’re more afraid of it than ever — witness peanut-free schools, the increasing (and tragic) unavailability of less-than-well-done hamburgers, people worriedly dissecting chicken dishes in restaurants in search of the slightest hint of pink — and at the same time more infatuated with it than ever.

People tune in to the Food Network in droves to watch world-renowned chefs cook things — offal, most notably — that few people I know would ever consider eating. The most famous chefs are arguably more famous than the most famous chefs have ever been, yet their waiters still contend with people determined to craft their own menu items from scratch. I’m ashamed of the very few foods I don’t like, notably cilantro, caraway seeds and (most awkwardly) olives. But some people seem to have elevated picky eating almost to a point of pride.

I understand the revulsion at the Double Down, believe me. It gives me chest pains just thinking about it. But there’s nothing magic or evil about its unhealthy properties, or those of any other fast food item. Steak tastes better at a steakhouse than at your friend’s house because your friend doesn’t put enough salt on his steak. What do people imagine they’re seeing when Iron Chef Mario Batali finishes off a sauce with half a pound of butter? There’s no less fat and cholesterol in there because he’d charge $35 for the dish in one of his restaurants.

<span style="font-weight: bold">A calorie’s a calorie. Fat’s fat. Salt’s salt. Consume more calories than you burn off and you’ll get fatter; consume fewer and you’ll get less fat. I’ve tried it myself, on and off — it works. <span style="color: #FF0000">KFC’s had enough free publicity, I think.</span></span>

i think if them scrape the breading off the chicken u may just have an Atkins-friendly meal.
