"Dark green bananas"

[Peasie]

I was in the Caribbean market last Friday and saw two types of green bananas. They were labeled "dark green bananas" for 50 cents per lb. and "green bananas" for 79 cents per lb. I was confused. So I asked a store employee what was the difference? He said the cheaper bananas were older .

Another shopper - lady from Trinidad - said that the "dark green bananas" are the 'figs' that you boil. I was more confused

I know that after I have green bananas in the fridge for a few days, they turn dark green. I still cook them, they cook up softer (closer to ripe), but I like the taste. They are slightly sweet.

atta banana nuh pose to go pan fridge. needa dat nor tomato, and mi see whole heap a ppl frigerate tomats too

say it aint so.....green bananas not suppose to go in the fridge .....nevva know. When I buy them....which is not often I will like 12 or so....am the only one that eats them....mr. stormmey say bananas are suppose to be eaten when they are ripe I even use them to make a salad....similar to tata salad....nice

in those other islands green bananas are referred to as fig. i think maybe the dark green ones were refrigerated because the tiefing shop keeper wants to make money at any cost and they will ripen if they're not kept cold.

I have heard the bananas that are supposed to be boiled called figs so I understand what the Trini woman was saying.

It does seems ;like a lot to keep up with though.

1. Regular bananas to be eaten raw as fruit
2. Plantains
3. Figs

They all look the same to me.

I hear there is supposed to be some big difference in taste with the figs. My friend told me she was going make me some soup with provisions. I seriously doubt that I will like the boiled green bananas since I don't like regular bananas or plantains. We will see though.

So what do bananas require? I was trying to force a half one down every day for the potassium. When I left them out on the counter they went from green to black. When I put them ih a brown bag, they went from green to only two yellow and the rest black. It was like they had 1 to 2 days to go from unripe to rotten.

Well they were delicious when I boiled them They were very very firm and slightly smaller than the other green bananas. Reminds me of the good boiling green bananas my mother used to get from St. Mary.

I think they were a different variety that the usual green bananas I buy to cook. When I par-boiled, removed peel, then boiled until tender they came out darker than the usual green bananas.

So I am wondering if anyone has seen this variety in other Caribbean markets??
