How do you know what to look for in a pressure cooker?

look for one where you can get replacement parts ... a good one can last you many years with simply replacing the rubber

any brands in particular?

I found one that was given to us (used) a long time ago but it is electric and as I use it I see the seal is loose and mi noh too feel the electric ting

but depending how the food turnout I might consider purchasing a pressure cooker (as it can mek wi beans faster than the crock pot )


and yes thanks for the tips for the one where u can get replacement parts

I have two here in Ghana: a very big modern stainless steel one of French manufacture, and the other an ancient <span style="font-style: italic"> Presto!</span> heavy cast aluminum one I bought at a thrift store before I came here, and so far both work well, aldoe the old one is hard to get new gaskets for.

We really need pressure cookers here, because the gas supply is unreliable and LP gas is not always available and so we always want to make it last. The local ppl use 'coal pot' stoves (a sort of small charcoal-pit barbecue) but I don't have the fanning skills to use one properly and also they are more expensive to use than gas.

The pressure cookers cook goat meat and mutton soft in about 20 minutes and chicken in 10. The 'acid test' here is Bambara Beans, a variety of local chickpea-like beans that are sweet, nutritious and very delicious but they take forever to cook without a pressure cooker. I soak them for 24 hours and then they will cook in about an hour, while soybeans take about 25 minutes.

I'm trying to get some new gaskets for my <span style="font-style: italic">Presto! </span> but it's not easy to get the right fit as the cooker was made so long ago in Ontario and has no model number on it.and internet credit-card purchases are not possible from Ghana. (except fi dem tief weh steal di US ones from di tourists dem).

I remember that when I was a small girl we had an identical <span style="font-style: italic">Presto! </span> cooker and my mother used it almost every day and for all sorts of things. And I remember two perfectly circular 10-inch spots on the kitchen ceiling - one which represented pea soup and the other orange marmalade. They cook fast but PLEASE don't forget about them!!

My most recent is Cooks, a JCPenney brand. I've had it a for about two years now, and nothing fell apart yet. The previous one I had, all types are parts were falling off.

Even though I would not buy an old school aluminum one now, I did have my grandmother's for a number of years. Nothing ever went wrong with it. You just had to be careful when taking the weight off the spout.

Dont know what Presto up to these days but I had one back in Jamaica and now that I think about it I should have carried it with me...

You mentioned beans taking long in the slow cooker ... tomorrow will type out the tip from the cook book mi atheist coworker give me bout soaking

Electric or Stove Top

I am buying my first Pressure Cooker this weekend. I see they offer an Electric one. Anyone ever use this one..

I am still afraid of Pressure Cookers every since I saw my Uncle get his face hella bloodied and a broken nose when that THINGY came off the top. Since that was
Dog Years ago, I am going to assume they are made safer.. atru

First I have seen of the Electic one..

Any Preference????? One better than the other.. they both cook the same

One more question. The big silver pots that sell on the road side in Jamaica are what they called Dutch pots, correct? and they are made or iron ???
Plan on picking up a few the end of the month to bring back..

Yes they are called Dutch pots in Jamaica aka &quot;dutchie&quot;

the key to safe pressure cooker-ing is to make sure the cover and/or pot is cool before trying to open the lid. If it's not cool all that pressure built up inside will &quot;blow&quot; once open.

Fastest way is to put the pot in the sink and run cold water over the cover

the brand I remember having in JA and here was also presto that one is mostly the rubber seal that ever needed replacing.

I have never had an electric one, but I'm sure I'd prefer stovetop.

I have had a few, but I prefer my grandmother's own. It was simpler to use and didn't ever die like some of the newer ones I've purchased.

As long as you release the pressure before removing the lid, it's no more dangerous than a normal pot. I don't know what happened with your uncle, but I have had two episodes where men forced the top off that resulted in an explosion. Nobody got hurt (quick reflexes) but the kitchen was a mess.

LOL. Yeah a little if you're unsure of what's supposed to happen. Release the pressure and all is well.

With my new fangled one, I'm not always confident the pressure has been released but if you have to fight to unlock the lid then something didn't go right.

I liked just taking the weight off the spot and letting the pressure out. Much simpler.

I have a T-fal Safe 2 pressure cooker - stainless steel, stove top. Works good. It is safe in that you cannot open it until it has cooled down a bit. Bought it a few years ago and use it every now and then
